Background / Teachers at Northern Health School teach in hospital settings both in wards and/or classrooms, and/or within the community supporting students with high health needs.
The teacher aide / administration assistant supports Northern Health School teaching staff and administration in the delivery of education services to these students.
Northern Health School administration assistant / teacher aide will be accountable to the board of trustees, principal and management team of Northern Health School
Terms of employment / As stated in the Support Staff in Schools Collective Employment agreement which can be accessed from the Ministry of Education at www.minedu.govt.nz/goto/employmentagreements
Hours of work / 20 hours per week
Responsible to / Principal and/or principal’s nominee
Functional relationships / Unit team leader, principal; deputy principal; teachers; support staff; board of trustees chairperson; students; caregivers; wider school community
Key tasks
On arrival
§ Check dishwasher and, if necessary, empty
§ Check with classroom teacher as to what is needed for the morning session plus any other tasks required to be done
§ Liaise with other teacher aide (Karen) which students are to be taken from ward to classroom
Before class
§ Turn on computers. Sharpen pencils and set up tables ready for the day
§ Paste any work into student workbook
§ Empty trays of students who have been discharged and give work to the appropriate teacher
§ Prepare art materials for afternoon session
§ Talk to classroom teacher and check
§ what is being planned
§ with whom to work
During class
§ Work with students as directed by teacher. If classroom is busy, move around as much as possible. If classroom is quiet, work with one or two students
§ If working with, or playing a game with students, allow them plenty of thinking time and let them do as much as possible. Suggest, rather than tell, give hints, show examples etc. but please allow students to follow through
§ Students must do their own work. Don’t do it for them otherwise it is not their work
§ Actively discourage student rudeness, smart or cheeky behaviour right from onset
§ Support teachers at all time
If not many students in class, check with teacher to see if other tasks can be done, eg photocopying. Other ideas of what could be done are
§ Gluing work into student workbooks
§ Put away library books and graded readers
§ Mount and display art work
§ Work with individual students on the ward
§ Cleaning and sorting teacher and student resources
After class
§ Ensure all materials are put away, tables and benches clear and cleaned
