Day 1: Stanley Safari Lodge, Victoria Falls, Zambia

Zambia

Get out into the bush where animals, both predators and prey, wander through unfenced camps, and where the human footprint is nowhere to be seen. The rewards of travelling in Zambia are those of exploring remote, mesmerising wilderness as full of an astonishing diversity of wildlife as any part of Southern Africa. Where one day you can canoe down a wide, placid river and the next raft through the raging rapids near world-famous Victoria Falls.

Though landlocked, three great rivers, the Kafue, the Luangwa and the Zambezi, flow through Zambia, defining both its geography and the rhythms of life for many of its people. For the independent traveller, however, Zambia is a logistical challenge, because of its sheer size, dilapidated road network and upmarket facilities. For those who do venture here, the relative lack of crowds means an even more satisfying journey.

Victoria Falls, Zambia

One of the original natural wonders of the world, the Victoria Falls is a World Heritage Site and an extremely popular tourism attraction. Known locally as ‘The Smoke that Thunders’ this spectacle is accessible from both Zambia and Zimbabwe and it is an ideal place to combine a game viewing and water sports. There is excellent fishing, a terrifying bungee jump and arguably the best commercial white water rafting in the world.

Day Notes

On arrival at Livingstone International Airport a representative from Stanley Safaris will meet and transfer you to the lodge (20 mins), where you will settle into your accommodation. Stanley Safari Lodge is located on the hills overlooking the Zambezi River and Victoria Falls in a bush location. Accommodation is in 10 uniquely designed chalets that are constructed of teak and local stone and are open fronted or more colonial style brick and tiled rooms which are closed. Each with a private balcony ensuring spectacular views overlooking the Zambezi River and suites has plunge pools.

Overnight: Stanley Safari Lodge

Set on a hill bordering the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park and overlooking unspoilt bush, Stanley Safari Lodge is only 3km from the Victoria Falls. The views are splendid: the spray of the Falls in the distance, the mighty Zambezi river and on top of that yet another beautiful African sunset. From either our main garden, our infinity pool or from the privacy of your room, views are unmatched.
The open-sided Main House has been designed with space and views in mind and has a truly African feel. Enjoy sundowners in the African style lounge, a 3 course dinner in the dining room or spend some quiet time in the library or upper deck discovering the secrets of Africa.

Victoria Falls Guided Tour

A view of the Victoria Falls is something you will never forget and the best way to see them is on a guided tour. Discover how the Falls were formed and what local customs and traditions surround them. These tours are extremely informative and end with a visit to the local art and crafts centre.

Wild Horizons White Water Rafting

Since David Livingstone named Victoria Falls after his Queen, thousands of people have come from all over the world to witness the spectacle, a mile long curtain of water that stretches across the glistening basalt rock, erupts into spray, and then thunders into the canyons below. The walls of basalt rock that capture the mighty Zambezi form one of the great river corridors of the world. This is the domain of the Nyaminyami, the River God of the Tonga people and is now the highway for our rafts. At Victoria Falls the Zambezi River plummets into a gorge, which separates the placid river above the Falls and the turbulent rapids below. The gorge is over 100 meters deep at the Falls and increases to over 200 meters by the end of a full day raft trip. Despite this rugged terrain, the gorges below the Falls are thick with vegetation and incredibly spectacular.

Rafting on the Zambezi is a ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE. It is the WILDEST ONE DAY RUN IN THE WORLD beneath one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
If you don't do it you'll regret it as soon as you leave!

Bungee Jumping at Victoria Falls

Thrill-seekers can get their hearts racing and adrenalin pumping with a 111-metre bungee jump into off the bridge that separates Zambia and Zimbabwe. Jumpers are kitted out with state-of-the-art harnessing equipment before embarking on the freefall into the Zambezi River gorge below.

Helicopter Flight

See Victoria Falls from an entirely different perspective when you take a 15 or 30-minute helicopter flip over this awe-inspiring natural phenomenon. For an exhilarating day of action-packed adventure, it’s also possible to combine a white water rafting trip through Batoka Gorge with a helicopter pick-up from the bottom of the ravine, saving you the arduous walk back up.

African Queen Cruise

Sunset Cruise
In the fading twilight hours, take a sunset cruise. Heed the call of Africa while sipping traditional cocktails and enjoying tasty snacks. The transfer will collect you at 15h30 in winter and 16h00 in the summer months in time for the cruise departures at 16h00 in winter and 16h30 in summer. Following this most memorable of experiences, you will be transferred back to your hotel between 18h30 and 19h00.

Day 4: Luangwa River Camp, South Luangwa National Park

South Luangwa National Park

Bordering the Luangwa River, the northern and southern Luangwa National Parks contain some of the most breathtaking and untouched wilderness in Africa. As a result of this and the parks’ successful anti-poaching campaigns, the area has developed into a world-renowned wildlife haven. The South Luangwa National Park is renowned for its walking safari, which allows visitors to view elephant, hippo and even lion close-up under the supervision of professional and knowledgeable armed guides.

Day Notes

Depending on your flight time you will be transferred by vehicle to Livingstone Airport to connect with your onward flight to Mfuwe, South Luangwa. A guide from Robin Pope Safaris will meet you at Mfuwe Airport for transfer to Luangwa River Camp, through colourful village life. The ten bedded camp is situated opposite the Luangwa Wafwa (a game rich area of the park) in the Upper Lupande Game Management Area. It offers all the creature comforts of a lodge yet with all the intimacy, tailored activities and flexible mealtimes you come to expect from a bush camp. The camp is unique with its décor of locally crafted and handmade details. The main area is elevated between 1-3 metres on wooden decks affording great views to the park and river. The swimming pool is sunk into the deck, linked by a waterfall.

Seating areas are all elevated and open plan with a bar area as well as a dining and reading area. Depending on your arrival time you may settle in for some lunch, siesta then off on an afternoon activity. There is an option to turn back after sundowners or continue to see what nocturnals you can spot, returning to camp by 8pm.

Overnight: Luangwa River Camp

Great attention to detail has made Luangwa River Lodge quite like nothing else currently in South Luangwa or Zambia. The lodge’s unique and exquisite décor (all locally crafted and hand-made) fuses vibrant earth tones and raw materials. Palm stalks, indigenous timber, thatch and red earthen plaster create a strikingly elegant yet warm atmosphere. The lodge is elevated between 1-3 metres on wooden decks affording great views to the park and river. The [infinity] swimming pool is sunk into the deck on two levels with a waterfall adjoining the two pools (one for swimming and the other for seating). Seating areas are all elevated and open plan with a bar area as well as a dining and reading area.

Day 7: Pumulani on Lake Malawi, Cape Maclear

Malawi

Malawi is known as the Warm Heart of Africa because of the legendary welcome extended to all who visit. Exceptional natural scenery, most famously Lake Malawi, compliments this warm welcome and there is plenty to see and do. Other major attractions include the Nyika Plateau, Mount Mulanje, the Zomba Plateau, Lake Malawi National Park and the Liwonde National Park.

Cape Maclear

Cape Maclear is one of the premier Lake Malawi destinations, renowned for its sunsets and snorkelling.

Day Notes

After an early breakfast, transfer to Mfuwe Airport for your flight to Lilongwe. The flight time to Lilongwe is approximately 50 minutes. On arrival at Lilongwe’s Kamuzu Airport, you will be met by our staff, who will assist with immigration procedures and the payment of airport taxes. Then onto your road transfer to Pumulani.

Pumulani is situated on the Westside of the Nankumba Peninsula in the South end of Lake Malawi – romantically called “The Lake of Stars”. The ten villas are scattered around the hillside and are individual in shape and style but all have a spacious bedroom, bathroom and extensive sitting area. The front sliding doors open onto the deck – elevated above the ground giving optimal views.

The central dinning and bar area is high above the lake with the most spectacular views and leads onto an expansive deck. The infinity swimming pool is on a lower terraced deck. The lake shore bar offers light snacks as well as refreshments. Meals will be served in the dining area, on the beach or by arrangement on your private deck. The stunning setting of the lodge and the unique comfort of the rooms means that many guests choose to make relaxation their main activity, but there are enough activities available to keep guests busy.

Overnight: Pumulani on Lake Malawi

Pumulani is situated on the westside of the Nankumba Peninsula in the South end of Lake Malawi. The beauty of this lake is indescribable. The beautiful sparkling colours shimmering over the water, the clear blue skies and the panoramic vistas truly make you feel like you are in paradise. David Livingstone named Lake Malawi ‘Lake of Stars’ for good reason. According to experts this lake is home to more native fish species than any other lake in the world.
The ten villas are situated in such a way that they blend in completely with the natural surroundings and the cooling grass roofs reflect the African sun.
