Geography

Definition: is the study of places and relationships between people and their environments. Geographers explore both the physical of Earth’s surfaces and the human societies

Topography

Definition: the arrangement of the natural and physical features of an area.

Example: Social scientists study the topography of an island.

Irrigation

Definition: it is the watering of land to make it ready for agriculture.

Example: If you want to start a strawberry farm in the desert, then irrigation will be necessary.

Fertile

Definition: (of soil or land) producing abundant vegetation or crops

Example: The soil by the river was very fertile.

Vegetation

Definition: plants in a collective area, especially those found in a particular habitat

Example: The cliffs in Arizona had very little vegetation except cactus.

Latitude

Definition: the distance of a place north or south of the earth’s equator

Example: Toronto and Ontario are on the same latitude.

Longitude

Definition: the distance of a place east or west of the meridian, usually expressed in degrees and minutes.

Example: I’m at a longitude of 2 degrees West.

Equator

Definition: an imaginary line drawn around the earth equally distant from both poles, dividing the earth into the northern and southern hemispheres.

Example: The equator splits the world into two hemispheres.

Elevation

Definition: height above a given level, especially sea level

Example: We climbed the tallest mountain in CA, and our elevation was 10,000 feet.

Physical Features

Definition: the scientific study of the natural features on Earth’s surface including: land formation, climate, currents, etc.

Example: The physical features in Chile were destroyed with the earthwquake in the 1960s. It was one of the biggest earthquakes ever recorded.

Climate

Definition: the weather conditions in a general area or over a long period of time.

Example: Alaska has cold, wet climate that often reaches below 0 degrees.
