On 4th October, 1878 the St.-Petersburg Commander handed “Special Permit” for carrying out works in Smithy (Kuznitsa) situated in the suburb of St.-Petersburg on the Chernaya Rechka bank to 1st guild merchant Michael Pavlovich Fridland. This date is considered to be the date of foundation of the future national enterprise “Leningrad Northern Factory”.

In the end of 19th century Smithy turned into the wide profile machine-building factory, in 1912 the aviation department of Russko-Baltiisky Factory started working and the construction of airplanes was begun. Sikorsky I.I. was invited as a chief designer to the factory.

In 1916 Polikarpov N.N., the future designer of the famous “U-2”wich has been produced from 1929 to 1940, came to work in the factory.

On June 1920 the State Aviation Factory №3 was established on the base of the Russko-Baltiisky Factory.

According to drafts by Shavrov V.V. the factory has been producing airplane-amphibian SH-2 which took part in the expedition on ice-boat “Cheluskin” and which was involved in evacuation of Papanin’s flight of four aircraft from drifting station “North Pole-1”.

From 1958 the factory started producing “surface-to-air” aircrafts. The factory was also producing different types of modern air defence missiles for C-75 and C-200 and air-earth missiles.

From 1967 the factory bears the name “Leningrad Northern Facory”. From 1976 - it is manufacturing firm “Leningrad Northern Factory”, from November 1994 - it is national enterprise - “Leningrad Northern Factory”. In the end of 90s the factory produced anti-aircraft rockets with discharger for “C-300” – the most advanced in the field of world rocket production of this type.

The organization of work-shops is held due to subject-technological principle, it is possible to carry out specialized productions: casting, cold and hot blanking, thermal and galvanic, welding, mechanical operation, technologicalpreparation of plastic and elastic components, test table, laboratory reserve and preproduction system.

Governing body of manufacturing firm took a resolution on renewal of helicopterproduction. The factory became an initiator and developer of the conversion program for construction of multi-purpose five-seater helicopter K-115 supported on the federal level. The factory was also in charge of organization of XXI European Helicopter Forum which took place in St.-Petersburg in 1995. The son of the prominent aircraft designer Sikorsky also participated in this forum.

National enterprise “Leningrad Nothern Factory” is a basic enterprise for constructing spherical

tokamaks.

On 27th February 2003 the enterprise got a license for producing armaments and defense equipment: components for guided missiles, containers for transportation and storage of specialized equipment (ЕКПС 1417,8145) which was signed by general director of Russian Space Agency Yury Koptev. S.Phiveisky, general director of the “Leningrad Nothern Factory”, suppose that in the next few years the defence equipment by russian producers will predominate on the world market. Due to the contracts the factory will supply C-300 till 2008.
