Christian Character
Christian character is developed by allowing the Holy Spirit to work in our lives through the study of God's Word. We study the Bible to learn about the kind of character God desires in His people. Self-discipline is a key ingredient to being obedient to God, defeating sin in our lives, and putting on Christ-like qualities.
"No one can win a race with intermittent effort. Christ-likeness cannot be reached with that kind of effort either ~ it is an ongoing pursuit. So Paul says, "Let us keep living by that same standard to which we have attained" (Phil. 3:16). The Greek verb translated "keep living" refers to walking in line. Just as a runner must stay in his lane and keep up the same effort until he reaches the finish, you must stay in line spiritually and keep moving forward toward
the goal of Christ-likeness."
~ John MacArthur
Population of the World ~ 7,350,000,000
(From the Waldron Newsletter by Jim E. Waldron)
“He (Jesus) said the them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.” (Mark 16:15-16).
At no time in the history of man did a commander-in-chief ever give a more expansive order to his troops than the one quoted above. Never in the hisotry of the earth has there been such an enormous population to which that command applies. Such an order and such a mass of lost humanity make it imperative that those who are determined to spread the good news of “the kingdom of Christ and God” (Ephesians 5:5) must recognize the continuing urgency of total commitment to this great cause.
Yet congregations continue to disappear across the United States. According to the 2015 edition of Churches of Christ in the United States, there were 13,155 congregations in 2003, with 1,656,495 adherents; the number of congregations fell to 12,963 in 2006; 12,629 in 2009; 12,447 in 2012; and 12,300 at the beginning of 2015 with 1,519,695 adherents. Meaning a 6.5 percent drop in congregations, and 8.3 percent in adherents in twelve years. (21st Century Christian, P. O. Box 40526, Nashville, TN 37204-0526).
We are at war! It is obvious that never before have the churches of Christ, in the United States, been faced with a greater possibility that we could become a by-word or footnote in religious history.
What is the remedy? Total mobilization!!! When the United States was challenged with world war on December 7, 1941, and that war on two fronts ~ Asia and Europe, the only answer that presented itself was total mobilization. Able bodied fathers and sons went to war; mothers and daughters worked in homes, on farms, hospitals and factories to provide material in support of full mobilization.
Those of us who are concerned for the kingdom of Christ and God, to advance the agenda of Jesus in the face of an enormous population and gruesome challenges of Satan and his fellow travelers, must submit to full mobilization. The pip-squeak of a few minutes of Bible study in Sunday school with no memory work and no home work, then a few more minutes, sparingly attended on Wednesday evenings, is not getting the work done.
See the foyer bulletin board for the remainder of this article, which includes some additional facts/statistics.
