MARKING PERIOD 3 ASSIGNMENT
Reading assignment: Read TWO selections from the “Major Works”, TWO selections from the “Secondary Works” section and include a “visual” aid. [See back for reading selections.]
Writing assignment #1: Your first writing assignment is due on ______. This assignment should be written before you complete your reading assignment. You must draw upon your PRIOR KNOWLEDGE (previously read materials, fiction and non-fiction, current events, personal experiences, etc.) and answer the basic question (B.Q.). You must submit an essay of 3-5 pages typed (12 Times font, double-spaced) and you may not refer to any part of the reading selections.
B.Q.: Is the disintegration of the family unit the most important problem facing societies and cultures today?
Writing assignment #2: Your second assignment is due ______. After reading your “Major Works” and “Secondary Works” selections (as well as choosing your visual aid), you are asked to build an argument that addresses the MAJOR ASSERTION. This essay will mimic the AP EXAM by requiring you to defend, challenge, or qualify an assertion based on sources (and in this case, your Marking Period 3 selections). Your essay should be 6-10 pages typed (12 Times font, double-spaced) and should refer to your reading selections and visual aid. Use MLA format.
Major Assertion (to defend, challenge, or qualify): “Building America was not for the weak or fainthearted… nor is rebuilding it today. It’s those committed to living by [this] principle: honor and preserve the family.” (Pete Wilson, Washington Times, August 29, 1995 A14)
