English 10: Mr. Ilnitzki
Class
Materials:All students are required to bring a pen and pencil, a three subject GREEN notebook to be used only for English and a folder to class everyday along with the designated texts. Failure to have necessary materials will lead to penalties in the class participation grade and for repeat offenders, detention.
Curriculum:Literature – Students taking English 10 will study British authors and themes. A variety of genres will be analyzed, and a strong emphasis will be placed upon the usage and application of literary terms and how they promote a particular author's theme. The required texts are:
Adventures in British Literature (textbook)
excerpts from Beowulfand The Canterbury Tales (from textbook)
Macbeth, William Shakespeare
Frankenstein, Mary Shelley
Lord of the Flies, William Golding
Vocabulary Workshop – Level E, Sadlier-Oxford
Simple Plan, Scott Smith
Other texts may be included during the year.
Writing- Students will strengthen and expand their writing techniques and styles, especially in regards to the literary essay. The non-literary essay will be introduced to the student in accordance with the English regents. Strong emphasis will be placed on vocabulary usage, grammar and sentence structure, and essay organization.
PSAT/SAT prep – Classroom preparation, drill instruction, and HW exercises will be provided throughout the year for these two tests. Grammar and vocabulary will be covered throughout the year to aid on the SAT and also to improve communication skills in all areas.
Late
Policy:All students are responsible for adhering to due dates and making/getting notes when absent. Late HW will be penalized and only will be accepted late if completed in room (E214 or cafeteria) within three days of the absence. Two mornings and one afternoon during the week will be designated for HW make-ups. Major assignments will not be accepted after two days and will be penalized for each day late. No student is excused from HW's and tests because of previous absence. Please contact classmates or obtain assignments/due dates from the class websitewhenever absent.
Grading
Policy: Grades are calculated on a weighted scale: Writing 35 %, Tests 35%, Quizzes 20%, and HW/Class Participation 10%. Students will be notified at the beginning of a quarter if the weights are to be changed. Extra credit will only be assigned on a class level and as an enrichment project. Appointments for extra help are given upon request.
