What is a Christian?
Good Definition – Someone who loves God with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength as well as loves their neighbor as themselves.
IMPORTANT - Jesus never asked us to be a Christian…He asks us to be disciples
The term “Christian” only appears 3 times in the bible. It is not defined.
There are 261 references to ‘disciple’ in the New Testament
Disciple = Learner, Pupil, Apprentice
Key moments in a disciple’s life:
1. Salvation
- Rom. 3:10;23 - "As it is written, 'There is none righteous, not even one’...For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
- Rom. 6:23, "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
- Rom. 5:8, "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."

4. Lives like Jesus
1 John 2:3-6 NLT 3 And we can be sure that we know him if we obey his commandments. 4 If someone claims, “I know God,” but doesn’t obey God’s commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth. 5 But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him. 6 Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.
1 John 4:7-9 7Beloved, let us love one another, because love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9This is how God’s love was revealed among us: God sent His one and only Son into the world, so that we might live through Him.…
1 Peter 1:14-16 - 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”
John 1:14 NIV The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth…
Part 3 – Who you are
“As each one of us has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” – 1 Peter 4:10

“Whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.” 1 Peter 4:11
Thoughts about your results
- The key is to finding joy in serving is to find areas that best fit your gifting and live there. God made you unique and special. He is the one who gave you certain traits. Learning to use it for His kingdom produces the joy and fulfillment we all desire in our spiritual walk.
- There are things as Christians we are all asked to do, whether we are good at them or not. Some examples include:
- Serving – serve one another (Galatians 5:13)
- Exhortation – encourage each other (Hebrews 10:25)
- Giving – be a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7)
- Teaching – making disciples (Matthew 28:19)
- Showing mercy – be kind (Ephesians 4:32)
- Faith – trust God (2 Corinthians 5:7)
- Evangelism – share what God has done in our lives (Acts 1:8)
- No matter what your spiritual gifts are, the Christian virtue of love must accompany the exercise of those gifts; otherwise, they are useless. (1 Cor. 13:1-3)
