Detailed Explanation :

Act! Speak! Build! Week is a student-initiated week of advocacy and awareness on behalf of Habitat for Humanity and housing issues, locally and worldwide. It is a weeklong event that will include various activities to promote awareness and encourage involvement in Habitat for Humanity at the University of Louisville. The goal of ASB Week is to plan and host events focused on ending housing poverty.
Some possible events may include but are not limited to:
1.Creating a form letter and ask individuals to sign it. We will mail these letters to the House representative and state senators.
2. Visual representations (i.e. posters, chalking, window paint, yard signs) of statistics about poverty and homelessness, Habitat's impact in Metro Louisville, Kentucky, the United States, and world wide.
3. Panel discussion with speakers from Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville. These may be volunteers, directors, or people who live in Habitat houses.
4. Shantytown on Campus - students sleep outside on campus in boxes in order to promote homelessness awareness.
5. A campus mini-build where students build mailboxes, garden boxes, bird feeders, sheds, doors, and benches on campus. This promotes awareness and is a convenient way for students who have never worked with Habitat to have a hands-on experience. It also provides families with something they can put in their new yard to make it feel more like home.
6. Screening a movie outside that has a message about housing poverty. We might partner this with a grill out or food of some kind in order to attract students.
Our goal for Act! Speak! Build! Week is to gain support on campus. As a new RSO, we are looking to get our name out and gain more members, as well as promote Habitat for Humanity and housing poverty awareness. We have never done anything like this before and because we are a new RSO we have little money. We have fundraising planned but have not implemented them yet and are unsure of how much we will raise. We believe that it will enhance campus life and student engagement by starting a discussion about housing poverty and encouraging student to get involved in an RSO. The events will be planned and implemented in order to encourage the participation of all students.
We are requesting the money, without contributing much from fundraising and organizational funds, because we are a brand new RSO and are unsure of how our fundraising will go. Our hope is that after ASB Week!, we will attract many new members and be able to more firmly establish ourselves as an RSO so that in future years we can contribute more to ASB Week funding.
