Research ApprenticeshipMay-June 2012Researcher
- For 7 weeks during May-June 2012, as part of my MSc in Animal Behaviour, I spent 7 weeks in St Augustine, Trinidad studying the behaviour of the Trinidadian Guppy (Poecilia reticulata). This involved video-documentation of fish both in the lab at the University of the West Indies (St Augustine) and in the field at various river systems in the rainforests of the Trinidadian highlands.
Ocean AllianceAugust 2011-continuing...Multi-Role
- Cameraman (AVCHD) filming the daily life of crew aboard research vessel The Odyssey, and any wildlife encountered, on location in the Gulf of Mexico. Filming of wildlife centered around the biopsying of Sperm Whales, but also of Bottlenose and Spinner Dolphins, and a host of other species including a Leatherback Turtle and an Oceanic Sunfish.
- During second leg of expedition was the only member of camera-crew on board. Setting up, creating and re-creating shots, sole filming responsibility and on-call (and called upon often) 24 hours a day, various interviewing techniques and sound recording.
- Balanced filming with Science team responsibilities, up to 6 hours a day searching for whalesvisually and acoustically (via array dragged behind boat), taking shallow and deep water samples (including an 1000ft sample at Deepwater Horizon oil spill site), dissecting fish and jellyfish.
- Post-production work logging footage from entire expedition (1000+ shots), initial script writing/editing for creation of my own video/film on expedition.
Self-EmployedDecember-July 2011Wildlife Photography
- During the latter half of 2010 and the first half of 2011 I spent an intensive amount of time teaching myself Digital Photography (with an emphasis on capturing wildlife), including 3 months teaching myself the theory and technical side, and 5 months photographing the wildlife of South-West Florida. This culminated in the production of a Wildlife Photography Book, an attempt to encourage the residents of a community in Naples, Florida to observe and appreciate the biodiversity they share their lives with.
Wildscreen Film FestivalOctober 2010Volunteer Position
- Volunteer at the 2010 Wildscreen Film Festival. The work demanded high amounts of energy and long hours, but provided many opportunities and experiences. Among these was the chance to meet people including George Schaller, Jim Leape (Director-General of WWF), Doug Allan and a number of commissioners from organisations such as the BBC and National Geographic. Furthermore, being immersed into an environment full of intelligent, passionate and like-minded peoples was a unique and fantastic opportunity.

- Working as a junior researcher on ‘Digging for Britain: Series 2’ provided an invaluable insight into television and factual documentary making through the eyes of a production company. Jobs included sourcing stories, scouring the news, liaising with press offices and universities/academic institutions, settings up meetings, interviewing contributors and feeding back to the senior researcher. The job required great organisation, efficiency and an excellent general knowledge of UK history and prehistory.
G4S Secure Solutions Wimbledon Tennis Championships 2009/2010/20112009: Player Escort Centre Court & Court 1; 2010: Player Escort Team Leader; 2011 Gate 1 Team Leader
- The first two years working for G4S at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships entailed a high degree of responsibility requiring cooperation and organisation under enormous pressure: including scheduling the movement of many people at the same time as Team Leader (2010), crowd control, working with high profile peoples and engagement with the national and international media. The 2011 position on Gate 1 proved a different proposition demanding an alternative skill set. Greatly increased responsibilities at the forefront of Wimbledon’s security (Gate 1) included the need for man-management skills controlling a team of 50 as team leader, and dealing with a much greater spectrum of problems from extremely delicate situations, to ones requiring great deals of professional assertion.

During my tenure at the University of Durham I specialized in several subjects that I found particularly interesting and intellectually stimulating: primatology (in the module Evolutionary AnthropologyI was graded first out of 83 students), human evolution and hunter-gatherer societies. I also had a thorough interest in ancient trade routes, and the role they played in cultural, economic and technological diffusion: my dissertation studied the fascinating trade links between the Roman Empire and the Indian subcontinent.

Other Interests
My formal education highlights my interests well: my BA in Archaeology and Anthropology and MSc in Animal Behaviour-in both the disciplines covered and the conversion from a Bachelor of Arts to a Masters of Science. These degrees reflect my core passions of natural history, culture, history and that which brings it together-travel. Whether it be the intense poverty of Bangladesh, the natural history of the Fijian islands, or the myriad of culture, religion and history of Istanbul, I am lucky enough to have experienced and immersed myself within a variety of countries and cultures-and have thoroughly enjoyed doing so-I hope that in the future I am able to satisfy these interests.I also have a keen enthusiasm for photography, a passion which greatly compliments the aforementioned.
