HPPR428 | Course Style Sheet
In this course you will be submitting two kinds of assignments—individual essays and team discussion reports. Because the team assignment is posted for classmates to read in a special forum, it is to be submitted in a slightly different format than the essay. Specs for presenting each type of assignment follow, with a separate section on citation of sources that applies to both.
Typing Instructions for the Individual Essay:
1.Double space text. Line up all text to the left-hand margin without indenting paragraphs. Leave two spaces when starting a new paragraph.
2.Include a cover page that has FOUR items of information—a descriptive title (not just the assignment question), your name and student number, the date, and course details (i.e. “submitted to Margaret Mercer in partial requirements for HPPR428 Ethics & PR”).
3.Indicate word count at the end.
4.Use a 12-point Times Roman font.

5.Create pages with one-inch margins and align text left again with no indents at the start of paragraphs. Leave two spaces between paragraphs.
6.Include page numbers in a consistent manner. (Using a header or footer is acceptable OR follow the conventional essay pattern: “centered bottom” on all pages except page one where the number is located in the upper right-hand corner.
7.Use sub-heads to improve the organization of the paper.

9. In preparation for electronic submission save your essay as MS Word™ .doc files. It may be necessary to check your default setting to avoid submitting as file extension<.docx> The file should be named: Yourlastname/Unit#/Case. (Ex: Mekelburg/Unit1Case)

1. Double-space text. Line up all text to the left-hand margin without indenting paragraphs. Leave two spaces when starting a new paragraph.
2. Provide team number and names of participants at the top.
3. Insert a copy of the assigned discussion question at the top for the benefit of other readers.
4. Indicate word count at the end.

6. Follow the instructions given on the assignment page for electronic submission into the special forum.
Citing Sources:
Plagiarism, passing off the ideas or work of another as your own, even if you did not specifically intend to do so, is a serious offence. Please refer to The UVic Writer’s Guide: Plagiarism for further information. The UVic School of Nursing also has a helpful resource, Student Guide to Avoiding Plagiarism
1. Use quotation marks to offset directly quoted material followed by in-text citations. Be sure to cite the sources for all indirectly quoted or paraphrased references.
2. Place footnotes (numbered sequentially throughout the essay) at the bottom of each page OR at the end of your essay (called endnotes).
3. Include a bibliography at the end of the paper listing everything you have sourced, read, referred to, etc. Often, we internalize ideas without being aware. A bibliography ensures everything you’ve referred to or read is referenced to ensure attribution to other’s ideas.
4. Use the following formats (note punctuation and italicization):
- Personal communication: If you interview someone, indicate as follows, “Personal communication, date).
- A magazine article: Author’s Last Name, Initial. (Month and year of publication). Title of article, Title of Magazine, p. #.
- A book: Author’s Last Name, Initial. (Year of publication). Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher, p.# (Omit page number if you are not quoting, only using ideas).
- A scholarly journal article: Author’s Last Name, Initial (Year of publication). Title of article. Title of Journal, Vol. (No.), p. #. (Omit page number if not quoting).
- If there is no author, use the name of the article, or the association if that is the author.
- A web site: Author’s Last Name, Initial (if you can find one). Title of the page. [accessed date] URL.
