Sixth Grade Nutrition Project

2012

"You are what you EAT!"

Scoring Rubric

1. Write down EVERYTHING that you eat and drink for ONE DAY.

a. Breakfast

b. Lunch

c. Dinner

d. Snacks

2. Be extra careful to RECORD the amount you eat or the number of servings that you had.

3. Be sure to RECORD ALL of your beverages. There is no need to record the water that you drink, however, you should have about eight glasses of eight ounces each day!

4. After you have written down all that you've eaten, you'll need to go ONLINE to find NUTRITION FACTS about each food consumed.

You'll find information at the following sites:

http://www.nutri-facts.com/

http://www.nutrition.gov

http://nutritiondata.self.com/

http://www.myfitnesspal.com/

http://www.mypyramidtracker.gov/

You'll be able to find nutritional information at brand name websites as well, including fast food restaurants.

5. PRINT OUT and PASTE (glue) your labels in an organized and neat manner onto a typical 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper. You MIGHT want to use a different color sheet of paper to differentiate between what you had for BREAKFAST - LUNCH - DINNER - SNACKS.

6. It is sometimes easier to COPY and PASTE ALL of the NUTRITION FACTS LABELS into a word document, then print. Otherwise, you end up printing a lot of useless information and advertisements.

Trim those labels with a scissors and organize them onto your 8.5 x 11 paper. Be NEAT...it matters!

7. Add up the total number of:

a. calories

b. fat grams

c. carbohydrate grams

d. protein grams

and...post your totals following

a. breakfast

b. lunch

c. dinner

d. snacks

8. ADD UP the TOTAL number of...

a. CALORIES

b. FAT GRAMS

c. CARBOHYDRATE GRAMS

d. PROTEIN GRAMS

for your ENTIRE DAY!

9. Write a conclusion assessing your eating habits for that ONE DAY.

Are you eating too many processed foods?

Might you benefit from adding more fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet?

Are you consuming too much saturated fat?

How much of your carbohydrate intake comes from simple sugars?

Take a look at YOUR INFORMATION...then write your conclusion.
