Sub: Submission of Extension of Project on “Forming the wings of Escape”

Respected Sir,

Greetings from Jeeva Jyothi team members.

We at JEEVA jyothi (JJ) thank you for giving us an opportunity to present to you our project extension.

This community has been deprived of all basic human rights. JJ meanwhile by working in the area for the last year has created a good impact among parents and owners. Based on the above measure these people are aware of their rights and can ‘ Save’ the community as whole from sustained poverty and bonded labour system.

The main focus of JJ with this project is to catch the children at a very early stage. Thus preventing child labour elimination and bonded labourer system. By this programme we are in an attempt to rehabilitate the bonded labourers by improving their present status. Hence this approach has a potential to serve as a model for similar migrants in other areas.

This project, which is designed, meet the education, nutrition and the health need of the children and mothers. Please contact us with any of your questions to discuss the matter further. Thanking you for granting us permission to present our project proposal.

Looking forward to your sanctions for early implementation of the project.

Sincerely,

Mr. Susai Raj

Executive Director.

PROJECT INFORMATION

Main objectives

To uphold the Educational and Health Rights of the Children by preparing Mothers and Children.

Specific Objective

To prevent nutritional deficiency problems in children and mothers.

To ensure the practice of proper health care system.

To enable the fullest participation of the parents in the child care activities right from conception of the foetus till the school going age.

To promote primary development of the children with secured place for learning before entering the school atmosphere.

To main stream the children in the society by inculcating the practice of school going at an early age.

To link health measures introduced by the government with the community.

To improve the nutritional status of the children and mothers.

Need For the Project

Women and Children who are the vulnerable and deprived sectors of the Rice Mills are the focus group in this project. Children between 0 - 5 years of age, pregnant women and lactating mothers would be our target group for this project, because the group as a whole deprived of basic human rights. The children in the walled rice mills soon observe and pick up the habits and behaviour of the parents and begin helping their parents in the rice sweeping activities at a very young age of 5 years. So these children become child labourers in the future and therefore attempts to enroll them in schools becomes impossible. Hence this project ensures to regularize the practice of school going behaviour of the child from the age of 3 years onwards.

Unaware of proper nourishment, the nature of their job and long working hours of 16 – 18 has made the mothers and the children nutritionally deficient. These people seldom have any chance to eat 3 square meal a day with necessary nutrients and regular medical care has been denied to the pregnant women. Once they become lactating mothers, they would not be in a position to feed their babies sufficiently because of mal- nourishment problems. The children of those parents are very much malnourished and are prone to sickness very often. Being illiterate and ignorant, the parents are unaware of the child rearing practices.

The Child care center will provide an opportunity to the children to fulfill their deprived childhood needs and will be an enterprising one to make them healthy. More over the center will provide an opportunity to continue formal education once they attain the age of six. Though there are such centers run by the government, it is not utilized by the community for various reasons like distance, limitation to accommodate more than the fixed size, etc. Hence there is a necessity to set up such centers for the mothers and the children. This program not only focuses on born children but also targets on unborn.

Additional attentions of the project in this year

The project is an Education cum Health integrated programme targeted to address the basic needs of the vulnerable sectors (Children and Women). This is a follow up proposal. Based on the review of the last year’s project, the newly formulated project is subjected to minor modifications. More and more attention given this year on their Education and health aspects have been introduced in this proposal. This project is designed for a period of 12 months in order to get a concrete result in terms of school enrollment and to prevent a gap in the ongoing project.

The project is a Play or Pre school programme targeted for children and mothers. The project consists of 2 centers covering 25 children each in the age group of 3 – 5 years. This project prepares children physically and mentally for formal schooling. It also brings about the participation of the parents and the owners in the child caring process. Health, which is an important aspect like education, will be educated to the masses. Available health measures can be linked up with the community. Slowly they are prepared to practice health measures to live peacefully without sickness and to ensure their fullest participation. The continuity of the preschool activity or the project will eradicate the problems of child labour and abolish bonded labourer system in Nerkalams(Rice mills). This can also serve as a model programme to be replicated by the government and other NGO’s in the future.

Budget notes:

The following items were increased in the budget in comparison with previous budget.

Increments in the Staff remuneration

There is always an expectation from the staffs as they have worked in the project for one year and looking for increments in their remuneration to be continued in this year.

Educational kit

We could see the interest of children for their creative learning in our past interventions; therefore we would like to buy more educational kit and books.

Supplementary food vitamin tablets & tonic

Most of the children who come to the center are malnourished and looking pale, therefore we included supplementary food (eggs), provide more vitamin tablets and tonics this year in the project.

Conclusion

Mothers of the children attending play school will develop confidence in them regarding the future of their children. They will become more responsible in educating their children further. Pregnant women and lactating mothers become aware of the Ante – Natal and Post – natal care, childcare and healthy child rearing practices including timely vaccination and nutrition etc. Thus this will enable safer delivery and prevents delivery deaths, disabilities, and handicaps in the community. The health education programme will therefore minimize the incidence of infanticide, foeticide & natural abortions. By and large this will cultivate the habit of going to school than to work for the children and thus will prevent children being victims of child labour.
