ELIM INTERNATIONAL MISSIONS | TONY AND URSULA WILSON | THAILAND | May 2011

P.O.Box 44, NakornSawan, 60000.Thailand

Dear Friends at Kilsyth

We have a truck going round the city here announcing that there will be a great catastrophe on the 21st May. It causes some concern to some of our folks. But there are strange things here that have taken place that make the locals wonder. We had an earthquake up on the Thai-Burma border and the last time I wrote I mentioned that we had, had freak weather. It happened again just before Easter. I have never doubted on the day of the crucifixion that from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour, but have wondered how it could happen, that is until just before Easter in NakornSawan. The day started bright as ever at 5-30 am but by 9 the clouds were gathering at a time that we never seen rain. By 10 am it was dark and you needed the house lights on and by 11 am it was as if it was night time. It was quite scary.

I was feeling that it was time I considered doing more walking for the sake of my health. So as the sun was setting I went off to church by foot for a brief meeting. When I finished the meeting I thought of a quick short cut home, for the sake of my health! As I entered the narrow alley way I realised that it was a beautiful sun set and then I heard the noise. I looked up and saw this black monster of a dog tearing for me. Usually it has a muzzle round its mouth for it is ferocious. Retreat was the better form of valour but I am past the age to run! Somehow from the back of my mind I had remembered just passing a boom and a wee thing that (not seen in the west) that Thais use to sweep bits and pieces into, propped up again the wall. A reflex action took me to the 1st object which was not alas the broom but this other wee thingy. Anyway I wielded it as a weapon and was able to keep the dog at bay as it darted backwards and forwards growling fiercely. I was shouting for the owner to get out and get the dog and this attracted quite a few bystanders watching this Farang (foreigner) fighting off the dog. Then a rush of blood proved fatal. Again a reflex action brought this wee thingy down on the dogs head. There is no RSPCA here! But alas it broke over the dogs head as it yelped away. But then it lunged at me and fortunately the owner came and ordered the dog into the yard as the wife closed the iron gates. Then I did what I believe you should never do – take you eye off the enemy. I walked away with a word of advice to the owner to keep the dog inside from now on. But as I did the dog darted out again and got me firmly in its mouth right on my Achilles tendon. Blood was everywhere and my shoe was filled with it. I could not walk for the pain. I was able to get home and then straight off to the hospital for dressings and all the rest as well as a set of rabies injections. 14 people died alone last year in Bangkok with rabies from dog bites. No more walking for the sake of my health!

This last month we had a Church camp. Our members wanted one, so that we could spend time together before our retirement. We had most of our members with us for 3 days and two nights. It was a great time of fellowship. We travelled about two hours by road to this wee spot which actually had a swimming pool. Some how this always attracts the attention of the muscly guys that want to chuck the missionary into the deep end of the pool. I resisted several times until realised it was easier to get slam dunked and then life would be easier. We had great meetings and everybody seemed to be challenged and blessed. The accommodation was quaint. Each room was like a wee Thai house on stilts and we all had our own bathroom. We spent time after the services eating and laughing and enjoying each others fellowship until bed time. Then it started. I was just getting into bed when I heard what sounded like some one walking in heavy boots on the roof - the sound of walking on corrugated iron. I went out and saw that the roof was tiled though. I looked around and saw nobody. Then the same noise again – just as I was putting my head on the pillow. So I heaved out of bed and this time crept around the place. There was absolutely nothing. So I thought it was probably the young fellas playing pranks: so I resorted to hiding in the bushes and behind trees, but again there was nobody. I went back to bed and reported my findings to Ursula. Just as I got my head on the pillow the same thing happened again. So I went out and this time met two young girls from our church taking the night air! I asked them if they had heard anything and they said all was lovely and quiet. Then it broke out and their hair stood on end! Such noises are not unusual in Thai homes and places like this. The next morning several other families, in different parts of the camp mentioned that they had, had a pretty bad night with the same noises. So the 2nd night I and the two pastors went and prayed in each place and drove the demon off in the Name of Jesus. Next morning each of the families reported that they had a perfectly quiet night and great sleep. But Ursula and I were constantly troubled all night long. We arrived home pretty weary but really blessed. But only after several days had passed, we noticed that there was this feeling of oppression. But this time deliverance came fully to us and His peace was restored through the Name of Jesus.

We should have known that a camp site available on short notice must have problems either with the water supply; the food wasn’t good or something like that. The local night watchman on being quizzed admitted to the fact that lots of groups had been similarly disturbed and that they never cameback for a further visit.

With our love,

Tony & Ursula
