Hurricanes

Materials: Ziplock bag containing one Lego building base, small one, two, three, and four dot blocks of various colors, this direction sheet.

There are several major components of a hurricane:

  • The eye
  • The eye wall
  • The counterclockwise wind pattern
  • The rain bands (feeder bands)
  • The strongest quadrant
  • The weakest quadrant
  • The direction of movement

Using the Legos provided, create a flat model of a hurricane. Be sure to:

  • Create the eye (odd color)
  • Create the eye wall (contrasting color)
  • Create a visual representation of counterclockwise rotation by use of feeder (rain) bands (one color used to represent three quadrants of feeders)
  • Show, by contrasting color and more intense feeders, the northeast quadrant (strongest)
  • Visually show the weakest quadrant (use fewer blocks)
  • Show landfall (where water meets land)
  • Show forward motion (create indicator)

All Legos may or may not be used depending of your personal model.

Evaluation
  • Be ready to explain each component of you hurricane model.
  • Every member of your team will be ask to explain an equal amount of the project.
  • Teacher will select what part of model you will explain.
