Pregnancy:

34% of women are pregnant at least once before the age of 20

In 2010, more than 365,000 teens aged 15-19 gave birth. Of these births, 66,800 were repeat teen births. 57,200 were second births, 8,400 were third births, 1,200 were fourth or higher births.

Condoms:

Approximately 14% of couples using condoms as their method of birth control are pregnant in their first year of use

100% condom use may reduce the risk of transmitting HIV by 85%

100% condom use may reduce risk of transmitting chlamydia or gonorrhea by 50%

No studies have shown condom use to effectively reduce risk of transmitting HPV

General:

20 million people become infected with one or more STDs each year in the US, half are among young people ages 15–24

Bacterial infections may be cured by antibiotics

Aside from Hepatitismostviral infections have NO cure

BACTERIAL STIs include:

Chlamydia:

1,412,791 currently infectedin the US

1 in 15 sexually active females aged 14-19 years has chlamydia.

Spread via vaginal, oral or anal sex.

Chlamydia can still be transmitted even if a man does not ejaculate.

Gonorrhea:

321,849 currently infected in the US

Gonorrhea is the second most commonly reported bacterial STD.

Spread via anal, vaginal, or oral sex. Gonorrhea can still be transmitted via fluids even if a man does not ejaculate.

Drug-resistant strains of gonorrhea are increasing, and successful treatment of gonorrhea is becoming more difficult.

Syphilis:

46,042currently infected in the US

Syphilis can be transmitted during vaginal, anal, or oral sexual contact.

Because syphilis sores can be hidden in the vagina, anus, under the foreskin, or mouth, it may not be obvious that a sex partner has syphilis.

PID:

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an infection of the uterus (womb), fallopian tubes (tubes that carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus) and other reproductive organs and can cause permanent damage to a woman’s reproductive tract (leading to long-term pelvic pain, inability to get pregnant and potentially deadly ectopic pregnancy - a pregnancy developing outside of the womb).

PID is a serious complication of some sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

Each year in the US, 750,000 women experience an episode of acute PID.

The more sex partners a woman has, the greater her risk of developing PID. A woman whose partner has more than one sex partner is at greater risk of developing PID, because of the potential for more exposure to infectious agents.

VIRAL STIs include:

Genital Herpes: (HSV)

Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2).

1 out of 6 sexually active people have genital HSV-2 infection.

Every year, 776,000 people in the US get new herpes infections

Spread via sexual contact with or without visible outbreaks (sores)

HIV:

1,148,200 people in the US are living with HIV infection, including 207,600 (1 in 5 people) who are unaware of their infection

Unlike some other viruses, the human body cannot get rid of HIV. Once you have HIV, you have it for life.

Over time, HIV can destroy so many of the cells in your immune system that the body can’t fight off other types of infections and disease. When this happens, HIV infection progresses to AIDS.

AIDS occurs when the immune system becomes badly damaged and the person becomes vulnerable to other infections and infection-related cancers

The presence of an STI greatly increases a person's likelihood of acquiring or transmitting HIV.

HPV:

HPV is the most common sexually transmitted virus in the US.

Approximately 79 million people in the US are currently infected with HPV

There are more than 40 types of HPV

Health problems caused by HPV include genital warts and cancers of the vulva, vagina, penis, anus, and oropharynx (head and neck)

.

Spread via skin to skin contact – penetration not necessary
