Unit description

ARTS301 and ARTS302 offer students near the end of a major sequence in one of the constituent subject areas within the School an opportunity to pursue in-depth study at an advanced level under supervision on an agreed topic not covered in other undergraduate units.

Conditions for enrolment in ARTS301 or ARTS302

36 cp including at least 24cp at Credit level or better and 12cp at 300 level — all in the relevant subject (i.e. Chinese, Communication Studies, English, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Music, Theatre Studies, Writing) and permission of Head of School.

You will also need to complete this ‘Project Proposal Form’, which your Supervisor and the Head of School are required to sign before permission to enrol in the unit is complete. Proposals should be received by the School at the email address provided below two weeks before commencement of lectures in each trimester. Permission depends on the quality and feasibility of the proposed project and the School’s capacity to provide supervision. While the School will advise the Enrolments and Progression team at Student Central of the permissions granted for enrolment in ARTS301 or ARTS302, it is the student’s own responsibility to ensure that he/she is correctly enrolled in the unit via Student Central. Notification of approval will come from Enrolments and Progression.

ARTS301 Project Proposal

ARTS302 Project Proposal

As a 6cp unit, the proposal should describe a project requiring 150 hours of work. The proposal should make clear the nature of the question to be investigated, and how the project will illuminate some aspect of the research question. A proposal should also demonstrate that some preparatory work has been completed, and that you have been thinking about the scale and scope of the project and looking for any existing writing which has already been completed by other investigators on the issue. Approval is dependent on the availability of supervision and resources.

Assessment will be assignment work totalling 4000 words. The number of assessable items, topics, weighting and due dates will be determined through consultation with the project supervisor.

5. Research Resources List. Include at least four primary texts such as novels, plays, films, etc that you propose to study in depth, and at least six secondary or scholarly/critical texts that other investigators of the topic have published and/or that help you to develop a methodology for your project.
It is the student’s responsibility to approach a member of the School of Arts academic staff about supervision of their project and to do this BEFORE submitting this form.
