Debating Challenge

What is it?

The NAIDOC Debating challenge is aimed at students who would like to develop skills in research, goal-setting, organisation and oral presentation, while increasing their knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures in a localised context.

Who is involved?

All students are encouraged to participate (years7-12). Each team will consist of four studentsand must include at least two Aboriginal. Schools can enter up to two teams. Teams are to remain the same throughout the challenge. The students will work together to prepare both affirmative and negative arguments for the topic and will be advised on the day of the challenge which side they will argue.

Students whom participate in the heats will have an opportunity to move through to the finals and grand final which will be held in Sydney in Term 4. The debating topic is yet to be announced however, as in previous years will be in line with this year’s NAIDOC theme.

The theme for 2016 is- Songlines: The living narrative of our nation

For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, the Dreaming describes a time when the earth, people and animals were created by our ancestral spiritual beings. They created the rivers, lakes, plants, land formations and living creatures.

Dreaming tracks crisscross Australia and trace the journeys of our ancestral spirits as they created the land, animals and lores. These dreaming tracks are sometimes called ‘Songlines’ as they record the travels of these ancestral spirits who 'sung' the land into life.

Workshop

In addition to the challenge, we will be hosting a free workshop which aims to develop students’ skills knowledge and confidence. The workshop will address how to write and deliver a speech, formulate and prioritise arguments, roles of each speaker, rebuttals and the WOW factors when speaking that can be utilised when presenting their speech.

The WORKSHOPwill be held in Term 2, see venues and dates below.9:30am start. Completion will be approximately 1:30pm. Lunch will be provided for the students and the accompanying teacher (whom will need to stay with students for the duration of the day, for Duty of Care)

General Guidelines and Information*

What are the speaking requirements?

High schools will have the opportunity to participate in the Debating section of the day. Each team will consist of four students, withat least two Aboriginal and two non- Aboriginal. The students will work together to prepare both affirmative and negative arguments for the topic. Students will be advised on the day of the challenge which side they will argue.

How long do the students speak for?

Division / Speaking time / Warning Bell (2 bells) / Continuous Bell
High School / 4 minutes in total for each speaker. With allowance of time for rebuttals / 3 minutes 30 seconds / 4 minutes

What are the adjudicators looking for?

The adjudicators will make their decision based on the manner, matter and method the contestants employ in presenting their speeches. They will expect contestants to be confident and engaging speakers. The prepared speeches need to show an understanding ofthe 2016 theme and local content from their school surroundings, and be well developed and interesting. Contestants are also expected to demonstrate a balance of personal opinion and information in their speeches, as well as a balance of humour and sincerity.

What are the rules of the competition?

Other than the entry rules and speaking times detailed above, it should also be noted that contestants are not allowed to use any props or external aids such as PowerPoint presentations during their speeches. They are encouraged to speak from palm cards and present from a stage without the use of a lectern or microphone.

How much does the challenge cost?

FREE, Lunch will be provided

A teacher must accompany and stay with students throughout the day. The host school is required to provide their own teacher as well. No casual release funds are available.

Who adjudicates the NAIDOC Debating Challenge?A qualified adjudicator and also aqualified Aboriginal adjudicator from the Department of Education, Public Schools NSW.The adjudicators’decision will be final.

What are the prizes?

All students involved in the challenge will receive a certificate acknowledging their participation. Awards will then be presented to the teams who win their challenge. Winning teams will move forward in the Challenge to the final.

When does the NAIDOC Debating Challenge run?Schools are welcome to participate in any of the workshops and challenges but must register and only participate in one of each.
