OBJECTIVES: This class is designed to develop a thematic series of drawings while continuing the investigation of drawing materials and methods to promote exploration of creative possibilities. More complex and subtle drawings will be explored with an emphasis on individual development. Students are expected to demonstrate greater initiative both in the selection of conceptual problems and in their resolutions. The first nine weeks of class will emphasis process through theme-based assignments. Second half of the semester students will develop a series of thematic drawings that have a high quality in execution and concept.
CLASS PROCEDURE:
Students will work in and out of class on assignments (minimum of 12 hours a week).
Students will meet proximally once a week in small groups and or individual with instructor for informal discussions concerning research, material exploration, preparatory drawings, drawings in progress and completed drawings. There will be a full class critique proximally every two weeks.
ATTENDANCE: Students must attend all classes.
Because of the nature of the advanced class and its procedure it is extremely important that students attend all scheduled individual and group critiques. After two absents students final grade will be lower by one letter grade. 4 Absences will constitute a failing grade or mandatory withdraw.
GRADING PROCEDURE: Referring to attendance records and final review of student’s semester’s work will arrive at a semester grade. To help determine a final grade the following outline will be used. There is a subjective element in the grading for which the instructor, as a trained artist takes responsibility.

ADVANCED DRAWING STRATEGIES - how and what to present to the group on your scheduled day
Bring all materials related to your thematic drawings to class, anything that will help to understand ideas. Example: books, drawings, prints, photographs, graphs, notes, thumbnails, sketchbooks. (this includes drawings and ideas that did not work)
Come early to class to set up your materials
*use tables to arrange materials on if needed
*use walls to pin work on if needed
*use both if needed but have everything in one area
What needs to be said…
*be ready to explain what you are trying to do
*what interested you and why
*talk about the mediums you are using and how it will influence your decision-making
*what you think you will need or want to do next
Use the class group for feedback to help you with your work.
Tips to help take full advantage of your critique:
1. Control your critique.
Be an active participant. Have written down ahead of time a summary of what you are trying to do in your work. In order to get the feedback you need and want have questions prepare for class concerning your work. If the critiques is fixing on a point that isn’t your main concern listen and take note then redirected the critique.
2. Every critique has value.
Take notes or have someone else take notes for you during the critique. Listen to what is being said even if you don’t agree. Sometimes after reflection irrelevant or disagreeable comments may indicate something you hadn’t noticed or thought about previously.
