Survey and set out building and construction control

Purpose This unit standard is for people working, or who intend to work, in the surveying profession as a survey technician.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare for a construction set-out; establish origins and set out control for construction surveys; establish and record construction set-outs; and perform and record as-built surveys.

3 Evidence for this unit standard must comprise: a road alignment set-out that includes a horizontal curve, and a construction set-out for a structure of at least one hundred square metres.
4 Definitions
GPS refers to the United States NAVSTAR GPS or Navigation Signal Timing and Ranging Global Positioning System.
Job requirements take account of site conditions to meet contract specifications, and accord with procedures and work instructions written in quality manuals.
Workplace procedures refer to documented procedures specific to a surveying enterprise which set out the quality management requirements for the business practice and activities of that enterprise.
Site procedures refer to the client’s safety procedures construction plans, specifications, and schedules, applicable to the worksite.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Prepare for a construction set-out.
Performance criteria
1.1 Job requirements for a construction set-out are determined in accordance with workplace and site procedures.
Range position, heights, with or without offsets, tolerances, certification.
1.2 A survey method and equipment are selected to suit the job requirements and achieve required accuracy.
1.3 Set-out coordinates are determined in accordance with the current version of supplied construction data.
Range data – digital, electronic, printed;
prior to commencing operations, during surveying works.
1.4 Preparation includes site safety induction in accordance with the site safety plan.
Element 2
Establish origins and set out controls for construction surveys.
Range equipment for establishing origin may include but is not limited to – theodolite, total station, level, GPS.
Performance criteria
2.1 Permanent datums and reference marks are established in accordance with the job specifications.
Range reference marks – vertical control, horizontal control.
2.2 Critical survey marks are protected in accordance with workplace and site procedures.
2.3 Established survey control complies with tolerances specified in the job requirements.
Element 3
Establish and record construction set-outs.
Range construction – kerb and channel, building gridlines, bulk earthworks, drainage.
Performance criteria
3.1 Structure profiles and set-out marks are established in accordance with the job requirements.
3.2 Structure profiles and set-out marks are recorded in accordance with the job requirements.
Range recording may include – certification, signed plan, diagrams.
3.3 The construction set-out is communicated to the site supervisor in accordance with worksite procedures.
3.4 The construction set-out is audited in accordance with workplace procedures.
Range audit may include but is not limited to – independent field check, corroboration with site personnel.
Element 4
Perform and record as-built surveys.
Range as-built – kerb and channel, building location and height, drainage;
equipment may include but is not limited to – theodolite, total station, level, GPS.
Performance criteria
4.1 The as-built survey is performed in accordance with workplace procedures and job requirements.
4.2 The as-built survey is recorded and reported in accordance with job requirements.
4.3 The as-built survey is audited in accordance with workplace procedures.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
