Board of Directors Meeting – 6 January 2014
Present: Jerry Sloan, Judy Saint, Kathy Johnson, Ken Nahigian, Mynga Futrell, Rachel Harrington, Dave Flanders. With guest, Richard Langley. Absent: Vincent Wales and Jillian Stanley (Zazie).
In the absence of Zazie (AOF Secretary), Dave Flanders kindly agreed to act as pro tempore Secretary for this meeting. [Ken Nahigian agreed to transcribe from Dave’s notes, with notations and words like “pro tempore.”]
The meeting was called to order at 7:17 p.m.
No copy of the November Board Meeting minutes was available for review, so the Board did not review them. [Transcriber’s note: these minutes are available on the AOF Website, however.]
Ken Nahigian (Treasurer) presented the financial report for the month of December 2013. Total ending balance (all accounts) was $55837.72. The Board accepted this report. [The annual/summary report for all of 2013 will be available later.]
The Board elected Vincent Wales as President for 2014, with Mynga Futrell to continue as Vice President, Ken Nahigian as Treasurer, and Jillian Stanley as Secretary.
Mynga said she will try to obtain an updated version of the AOF Bylaws for the Board.
Upcoming General Meeting
The Board agreed to expend $500 for an AOF speaker [Sunday, March 30], Andrew Sidel, speaking on the separation of Church and State [title subsequently determined: "The Greatest Story Ever Sold: America as a Christian Nation"]. The Board resolved that the talk should be inclusive, with invitations and outreach to other secular groups in the Sacramento area.
Mynga said she would request Vince to print updated AOF business cards and flyers for Sidel’s presentation.
Reason Center
Report from Rachael Harrington. The Sacramento Reason Center project is now legally a non-profit organization, and also has a website, www.reasoncenter.org. The Board affirmed its commitment to provide funds as allocated to the Project to get it up and running.
Day of Prayer/Reason
Sacramento-area evangelicals will rally to celebrate the National Day of Prayer (Thursday, May 1). AOF Board Members agreed it would be good to stage a counter-rally celebrating the National Day of Reason [same day, see www.nationaldayofreason.org]. AOF may possibly derive some publicity.
Direction for AOF
Ken Nahigian recommended that AOF continue to pursue the “AOF Speaker Series” idea.
Judy Saint suggested AOF could help the less fortunate financially – for example, $100 towards someone in need each month.
The Board agreed to postpone the prior discussion on disbanding AOF.
Next Board Meeting
The next Board of Directors Meeting will occur Monday, March 3, 7:00 p.m., at Mel’s Dinner, 565 Howe Avenue, Sacramento.
The Board Meeting adjourned at approximately 8:40 p.m., with no notation of the exact time.
