2018-19 Classes for Juniors
EachJunior will take seven courses next year, the first six of which are mandatory.
1) English
Must take one of the following:
English 3
AP English 3 **
2) Foreign Language
Must take one of the following:
French 3
Honors French 3 **
Latin 3
Honors Latin 3 **
Mandarin 3
Honors Mandarin 3 **
Spanish 3
Honors Spanish 3 for non-native speakers ** (prerequisite -- Hon Spanish 2)
AP Spanish Language 3 ** (prerequisite -- Honors Spanish 2 for native speakers)
Level 4 languages open to those who complete Level 3 as sophomores
3) Mathematics
Must take one of the following:
Pre-Calculus
Honors Pre-Calculus **
Calculus (prerequisite -- Pre-Calculus or Honors Pre-Calculus)
Honors Multivariable Calculus** (pre-requisite AP Calculus or approval of instructor)
AP Calculus AB ** (prerequisite -- Honors Pre-Calculus)
AP Calculus BC **(prerequisite -- Honors Pre-Calculus)
AP Statistics ** (prerequisite – AP Calculus)
4) Science
Must take one of the following:
Biology
AP Biology **
AP Chemistry **
AP Environmental Science **
5) Social Science
Must take one of the following:
US History
AP US History **
6) Theology
Must take:
Theology 3
7) Fine Arts (Optional)
A junior may take afull year of fine arts if he wishes. Taking additional fine arts beyond the basic minimums may make a student more competitive during college admissions.

Visual arts classes including: Ceramics, Design, Digital Photography, Drawing, Painting, and
Photography (Black and White Film)
Performing arts classes including: Acting Workshop, Band, Music 1 or 2 (voice), Music

8) The seventh period – a combination of options
If a junior does not elect to take fine arts, he may take one or two semester-long courses:
Aquatic Skills (non-credit, one semester)
Computer Programming (graded, for-credit, full-year course)
Personal Finance (non-credit, one semester)
Lifetime Fitness (non-credit, one semester)
Journalism – Loyalist contributors only(non-credit, one semester, teacher approval required)
Junior Advisory (non-credit, one semester; may be taken twice)
Weight Training (non-credit, one semester)
Writing Workshop (non-credit, one semester)
** Given “Honors” credit by both Loyola High School and UC. Both award 5.0 GPA points for an A.
Important Dates for Pre-Registration and Registration for 2018-19 Courses
Feb 5 – Mar 2Teachers hold meetings for restricted courses at lunch, before or after school
Mar 5National Latin exams; AP Spanish 3 placement exam
Mar 6Pre-registration for all sophomores with their counselors
Mar 7AP English 3 placement exam
Mar 20-23Mathematics placement exams taken during regular math classes
Apr 16Acceptance lists for restricted courses available on Canvas
Apr 16-24Students submit written petitions for reconsideration for honors/AP courses
