JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Project Manager

Salary band: SPC 24-28

Location: The Shire Hall, Llandeilo

Section: Field Services

Accountable to (as line manager): Head of Field Services

Job Summary: To direct and manage a range of small-scale to large-scale archaeological projects including evaluations, excavations, field surveys, building recording, watching briefs and desk-based studies and to prepare written, illustrated reports on such projects.

Duties:

In consultation with the Head of Field Services –

  • Carrying out and writing up of small-scale to large-scale archaeological projects, including responsibility for maintaining discipline, professional and health and safety standards.
  • Supervision of archaeological staff, students and volunteers.
  • Line management of project staff.
  • Supervising the maintenance of all written, drawn survey and photographic records.
  • Overseeing and taking responsibility for the correct use and maintenance of all tools, equipment, vehicles and site accommodation assigned to a project.
  • Preparation of project designs and costings under the supervision of the Head of Field Services
  • Project management, including working to budget and liaison with outside parties – project sponsors, specialists, landowners, officials, curatorial archaeologists, the general public etc.
  • Carrying out post-fieldwork analysis and the preparation of written and illustrated archaeological reports.
  • The preparation of archaeological reports to a high standard for publication in academic journals.
  • Public lecturing, and, together with other Trust staff, the preparation of materials on individual projects for presentations and displays.
  • Other such duties and work as the Trust may require from time to time.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Accountable to (as line manager): Head of Field Services

The following are required:

  • A degree or equivalent in archaeology or a related subject (in exceptional circumstances knowledge and skills equivalent to these).
  • A proven ‘track record’ in the supervision and publication of archaeological reports.
  • The ability to write clear and concise reports for a wide range of different audiences.
  • Experience of producing costed written schemes of investigations.
  • Good knowledge of the organisation and structure of British archaeology.
  • IT skills in relation to word-processing, use of databases and knowledge of GIS.
  • A full driving licence

The following would be advantageous:

  • Membership (at AIFA level or above) of the Institute of Field Archaeologists and/or other professional bodies.
  • Knowledge of Wales, Welsh archaeology and the Welsh language.
