CATALOG DESCRIPTION: An introductory course in Spanish. Focuses on developing students’ capacity to use the language and to appreciate Spanish-speaking cultures. Emphasis is placed on skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar acquisition.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
1. Master basic Spanish vocabulary and grammar.
2. Understand simple oral communication about familiar topics, such as greetings, the alphabet, numbers, the weather and the calendar, descriptions of people, clothing, and leisure activities.
3. Speak in simple sentences about specific topics with enough accuracy to be understood by a native speaker of the language.
4. Ask and answer questions on everyday topics in the present tense.
5. Write simple standard expressions, complete sentences and short paragraphs.
6. Read and discuss simple paragraphs and articles which may include cultural and literary works.
7. Demonstrate understanding of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
8. Demonstrate understanding of the geography of the Spanish-speaking world.

Description: A two-semester course, Spanish 1-2 introduces the student to the Hispanic world, its people and its culture, through the study of the Spanish language. Emphasis is placed on language development that integrates the skills of listening, speaking, writing and reading. Students will learn to give and respond to oral directions and commands, understand and use forms of address and courtesy, ask and answer simple questions, discuss their lives concerning interests, needs, and daily routines, and function in practical situation using the target language. To support this communication, students will study vocabulary, grammar and usage in both oral and written forms. In doing so, students will be able to read isolated words and phrases in a situational context, comprehend brief written direction and information, and read short narrative texts using the Spanish language.
**The pacing for Spanish I is determined by the needs of the students so important dates for quizzes and projects etc. will be given in class and posted online
