Wednesday, February 23, 2011 Edition #28
Dear Cathedral Parents,
You may have noticed that the entranceway to Cathedral looks a bit different these days with a canopy decorating the entranceway to the school. On Saturday evening, this will be the canopy covering guests to “ShamrAuction Shines on the Silver Screen!”
ShamrAuction will be held here on Saturday evening. This is the largest event held by Cathedral High School each year and raises money to be used for student scholarships. Special kudos to Cathy Horn, Cathedral’s Director of Events, and to her team, for the great work, preparation, and planning required before this evening. They have been working towards this evening for the past year!
For those who are coming as guests, we thank you for your reservation and hope you have a wonderful time. For those who will be working during this evening, I thank you for your very generous sharing of your talents.

Congratulations to Alec Bannister (’10), who just received his admission appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point for the class of 2015. We are beginning to have quite a cadre of students there! Great job, Alec!
Conner Cox of Cathedral High School has been recognized as a 2010-2011 Discus Award winner for her achievements in the areas of Academics, Community Service, and Other Achievements. The Discus Awards is a national program that provides recognition and scholarship opportunities to all-around high school students who excel in three of ten key attributes. Conner is now eligible for 2010-2011 Discus Awards scholarships. Also, Conner created a multimedia profile highlighting her achievements, which may be viewed in the Discus Awards Winners Gallery at www.DiscusAwards.com/winners.
Congratulations to Nick Hanahan (’14), who is fencing at the Junior Olympics this week. The Junior Olympics are the US National Championships in fencing for the under 20 and the under 17 categories. Nicholas finished 6th out of 210 fencers in the under 17 men’s epee competition and finished 29th out of 220 fencers in the under 20 competition.
The top eight fencers are awarded medals in fencing tournaments. A podium finish is extremely difficult at JO’s because all of the fencers who attend have to either be on the points list or qualify in regional tournaments to be there. In fact, the top three ranked fencers in the under-17 age group (all of whom made the Cadet World Cup team and will be fencing in the Cadet World Cup tournament next month) did not make it to the podium today.
In this picture, Nick is shown with Sebastien Dos Santos, the coach for the US Olympic Men's Epee Team! The other picture is one of the medal winters,
Congratulations to senior Connor Ashby, the recipient of a prestigious Kelly Scholars Award at IU. The Kelly Scholars award includes tuition and fees, room and board, a stipend to cover books, and study abroad. Only 10 incoming freshmen from across the country are offered this award. Connor is the son of Stacy and Chris Ashby of McCordsville.
Congratulations to Andrew Cramer, Cathedral diver, who won the IHSAA Zionsville Regional Meet. He now will continue on to the IHSAA State Championship this weekend at the IU Natatorium. His schedule for this weekend will include a warm up on Friday evening. Prelims begin on Saturday morning at 7:30 AM with the meet beginning at 9:00 AM. Sixteen divers will advance from the prelims to the finals beginning at 1:00 PM.
· Our boys' sectional team will be attending the meet leaving Cathedral at noon on Saturday. There will be additional seats open on the bus. Since parking is an issue at the Natatorium, may we offer open seats to students who want to attend? If so, please call Coach Paula Meyer at 317/525-3761.
Congratulations to Dillon Paul (14), who participated inpre-national 2011 Land of Lincoln Short Track Championships at University of Illinois Ice Arena, Champaign, IL. on February 19th and 20th, 2011. He participated in class open B (13 to 16), where he placed3rdin 444m speed time 1:06.746 &777m speed time 2:07.964; 4th in333m speed time 0:51.644 , 500mspeed time 1:28.633 and 1000m speed time 2:51.620. Dillon also participated inSt. Louis Silver Skates2011, 85th Annual Championships, in St Louis, IL on February 5 – 6, 2011 and placed 4th place over all. He represented CHS and Elite Speed Program in Columbus, IN. Congratulations, Dillon, great job!
· Dillon met Jonathan Kuck, (shown in this picture) a student at Illinois University, an American Speed Skater who won the silver medal in the 2010 winter Olympics, won a silver medal in the World All-round Championships and World Junior Championships.

Tuition Assistance (Financial Aid) Application Deadline is Next Monday:
This is a reminder that the deadline for submitting an application for tuition assistance is next Monday, February 28. Families wishing to receive need-based tuition assistance must apply each year, as financial circumstances can change from year to year. To apply for tuition assistance, visit http://sss.nais.org and complete a Parents’ Financial Statement. When prompted for a school code, use Cathedral’s code of 2172. This will allow us to receive the data that you submit. Once you have completed the Parents’ Financial Statement online, please forward to the Enrollment Management Office a copy of your 2010 federal tax return and supporting documents (e.g. W-2 statements, 1099 statements, and schedules). We must receive your tax forms no later than April 15. Failing to meet these deadlines could result in a decrease in tuition assistance or, in extreme cases, forfeiture of eligibility for tuition assistance. If you have any questions about need-based tuition assistance at Cathedral, please contact Duane Emery, Vice President for Enrollment Management, at (317) 968-7360 or .

Junior Planning for College Day. We are formally introducing our juniors to the college search and application process with our Planning for College Day! I wanted to give you a reminder that the program will be taking place on Thursday, March 3rd, during periods 1 through 5. Juniors will be attending our program instead of their classes, but should be on time for their 6th period class.
· For those of you who are new to Cathedral or unfamiliar with our program, we invite college representatives to teach our students about various aspects of college admission. They do not give out school-specific information during their presentations, but act as experts in the college search, college application process, scholarship and financial aid processes, campus visits, interviews, and college life. The juniors rotate among 4 different presentations (College Admission Overview, Financial Aid, The Campus Visit and Mock Interview, and Student Life) during the program. We do give the admission representatives a chance to answer school-specific questions during our short college fair which concludes our program during 5th period in the Auxiliary Gym.
· Schools which will be in attendance this year are: Franklin College, DePauw University, Saint Mary’s College, Saint Louis University, Purdue University, Indiana University, University of Kentucky, Wittenberg University, Holy Cross College, Hanover College, University of Indianapolis, University of Alabama, Illinois College, and the University of Arizona. Teachers and staff are welcome to sit in on any of the presentations or attend the fair if your schedule permits (if you would like a schedule for the program, just let me know!).

I appreciate the many families who have made sure that their child’s inoculation records are updated with our Registrar, Mrs. Susie Thornburg. However we still have a few students for whom we do not have complete records. You may either see your family health care provider for these records or may use the Marion County Health Department Clinics (shown on this link): http://www.mchd.com/pdf/clinic_schedule.pdf
