Curriculum Focus This Week

Math -- This week students will begin Unit 3. The focus in this unit will be on equivalence in numbers, fractions, decimals and comparing these. There will be a quiz at the end of the week. When it is graded and returned to you, we encourage you to work on any problems that your child missed at home for extra practice.

**Please note that we as teachers maintain flexibility in the schedule of our math curriculum within our classrooms in order to differentiate to meet the needs of all students, both with extension and remediation.

Literacy Connections: This week students are focusing on their grammar skills by reviewing topics such as “Subject & Predicate” and “Proper Nouns”. We will also be practicing the transdisciplinary skill of Research, specifically efficient note-taking practices.

IB Unit of Inquiry

Trans. Theme: Where We Are in Place and Time

Central Idea: Challenges & Opportunities Promote Change

Lines of Inquiry: Motives for Exploration, Evaluating Multiple Perspectives, Impact of Change on Society

Students will be selecting their topic for our Migration Research Project and accessing a variety of resources as they prepare a final product for presentation. They will have two whole weeks for research. We encourage you to find more resources for your child to bring to school for this project. These can be articles printed from the internet or books checked out from the local library. Students should not be doing research at home as time will be provided in class, but they are welcome to look for additional resources to bring.

Homework – Please check your student’s yellow folder for the current homework sheet. A reminder that MONDAY homework is DUE and TUESDAY a new one comes out!

The intent of homework is to be another means of communication with parents. It’s another look into what is going on in the classrooms. Students should not be spending more than an hour each day on homework and should not work to a point of frustration. Teachers ask that parents assist students in pacing themselves throughout the week.
