Fabio Mastrangelo is commonly referred to as Russia’s most famous Italian born conductor. Currently, he holds a number of positions in Russia;Principal Conductor & Music Director of the State Hermitage Orchestra - St. Petersburg Camerata, Principal Conductor of Sinfonica Artica (State Symphony Orchestra of the Yakutsk Philharmonic. In addition, he serves as both Artistic Director of the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Camerata Soloists, and Principal Guest Conductor of the Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra. Since 2012 he has been Music Director of the open-air opera festival “Opera Vsem” and in 2013 was appointed Artistic Director of the St. Petersburg Theatre "Music Hall".
Upcoming engagements include a new production of Massenet's Manon (a co-production with both the Lausanne Opera Theatre and Verona's Filarmonico). Among future engagements are his debut with the Baden Baden Philharmonic in Tonhalle Zürich, Aarhus Symphony Orchestra in Denmark, and multiple return engagements with all of the principal Moscow orchestras including "Novaja Rossija" for a series of Carmina Burana at the Cremlin's Concert Hall.
Among major orchestras he has and will conduct Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Moscow Phil., National Phil. Orchestra of Russia, Novaja Rossija, GOS Orchestra "Svetlanov", Russian Philharmonic, Academic Symphony Orchestra of the St. Petersburg Phil., Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Novosibirsk Phil, Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Nizhni-Novgorod Phil. and Virtuosi of Moscow.
Recent engagements have included Verdi’s La Traviata at Mariinsky II –at “Stars of the White Nights” festival his highly successful debut with the Moscow’s Virtuosi paved the way to further engagements with Maestro Spivakov's NFOR (National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia). He conducted Aida at Arena di Verona and made an important debut at Moscow’s “Novaja Opera” with Verdi’s Rigoletto and Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette. Furthermore he conducted Rimsky-Korsakov's Golden Cockerel at the Festival “Opera Vsem” in St. Petersburg.
In April 2013, he made his debut with the Gdansk Philharmonic Orchestra (Poland) and returned to the stage as a pianist with a recital at the Small Hall of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic.
As a guest conductor he collaborates with important American, Canadian, and European orchestras. In Russia, he has conducted virtually all of the country’s best orchestras. For two seasons he was Music Director of the Società dei Concerti Orchestra (Bari, Italy). Since 2007, he is a permanent guest conductor at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. In the three following seasons, he was initially Principal Guest then Principal Conductor and Music Director of the State Opera & Ballet Theatre of Ekaterinburg where he led a vast repertory from Mozart to Prokofiev. His debut at the National Opera Theatre in Rome was with Bob Wilson’s production of Aida and he inaugurated the reconstructed Petruzzelli Theatre in Bari with Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.
Born in Bari, he holds piano diplomas earned in Italy, Switzerland and the UK. Among his mentors were Leonard Bernstein, Michel Tabachnik, Gustav Meier, Neeme Jarvi, and Jorma Panula. His career started as assistant conductor of the UofT Symphony Orchestra in Toronto, then Principal Conductor of the Hart House Chamber Strings (1993-2002).
