Domain: Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Cluster: Understand addition as putting together and adding to, and understand subtraction as taking apart and taking from.
Standard: K.OA.A.1 Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawing, sounds (eg: claps), acting out situations, or verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.
Purpose/Big Idea: Building students’ knowledge of the difference between “putting together” and “adding to” vs. “taking apart” and “taking from” as two different operations.
Materials:
·  Resource Sheet 5: +/- Every Pupil Response Cards
·  Popsicle or craft sticks
·  variety of word problems and number stories that utilize both operations
Activity:
·  Have students construct EPR cards by folding and gluing attached EPR card to a Popsicle or craft stick.
·  Gather students in a circle so they can see the responses during this activity.
·  Read word problems, pausing after each one to allow students to hold their EPR, indicating the correct operation.
·  Have student volunteers explain why the operation is correct and allow students to solve the word problems using fingers, mental images, sounds, or by acting out situations.
Guiding Questions:
·  What words or phrases help you decide what operation to use?
·  How do you know?
·  Does it make sense?
·  Are your groups getting larger or smaller?
·  How did you decide how to solve your problem?
