  • 3-ring binder- 1”
  • College-ruled paper
  • Pens- BLUE or BLACK ink ONLY and/or pencils (mechanical preferred)
  • Colored pencils-set of 12
  • Mechanical Pencils
  • Note: Coming to class daily without your materials is unacceptable and will result in loss of participation points; and/or science department detention, parental contact, guidance contact, or AP contact.

You will be given the instructions on how to keep this notebook separately.

Information is to be placed in the upper right hand corner.

GRADING POLICY

  • The county grading scale will be used and quality points are assessed based upon Hillsborough County Guidelines.
  • There will be tests, quizzes, labs, homework, class work, a mid-term exam and participation points calculated on a points system as follows:
  1. Points scored on Tests & Quizzes will average toward 40% of the overall grade
  2. Points scored on Projects & Labs will average towards a total of 30% of the grade.
  3. Points scored on Class work and Homework will average toward 25% of the grade.
  4. Points scored on Formatives will average toward 5% of the grade.

Edsby: grades and attendance are posted weekly.

  • Occasionally, I may send home written progress reports for your attention and signature.

Note: Copying another student’s answer on any assignment or talking during testing will result in BOTH students receiving a zero. It will be determined by the teacher if an alternative

assignment will be given and whether ANY or partial points will be awarded for the assignment.

STATEMENT ON PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism is unacceptable and will result in receipt of a zero for that assignment. Further actions will be taken based on the severity of the infraction(s), which may include one or more of the following: parental contact, AP contact, guidance counselor contact, NHS advisory contact.

ABSENCES/MAKE UP WORK

  • After an excused absence, it is the student’s responsibility for obtaining their missed assignments and for make up of their work within three days of absence for full credit.
  • Tests, quizzes, labs, etc. will be made up before or after school as arranged by student with teacher. Transportation is the student’s responsibility.
  • Any work assigned when the student is present, but collected during the student’s absence, will be considered due and must be turned in at the beginning of class on the day of the student’s return.
  • Late assignments, accompanied by parental contact, may receive ½ points maximum, of total earned points. Details concerning late assignment acceptance will be discussed with teacher at a student-teacher conference. Consecutive late assignments will be deemed an abuse of this privilege, and will receive only a check mark in the grade book, which may be considered during end of the semester grade calculation.

BEHAVIOR GUIDELINES

  • No cell phones or music-playing devices in class. Put them away before you come into class. This includes the headphones and cords. If seen and/or if your phone goes off (disrupts the class, vibrates, rings, etc.) during class, it will be taken away. If the phone goes off during a test or quiz, the student will have the phone taken away, and will receive a zero on their assessment (no retake is possible in this scenario). Cell phones will be given to the AP by the end of the day.
  • Class begins when the tardy bell rings. Preparation for class is the responsibility of each individual (daily materials requirement). Students will be in their assigned seats, quiet, with pencils sharpened, class materials out, and ready.
  • Field trip information, academic eligibility forms, etc. will be given to teacher prior to the tardy bell. It is your responsibility to retrieve your documents.
  • NO EATING OR DRINKING IN THE CLASSROOM per county guidelines. NO GUM. Water is permitted in the classroom.
  • Personal needs (restroom and grooming) will be taken care of between classes. If you have medical issues, please see your assigned assistant principal with documentation of your condition.
  • Lab equipment, materials, specimens and anything else in the classroom or lab WILL NOT be handled by the student without permission of the teacher.
  • Students will have assigned seats. They will remain in their seats unless otherwise instructed by the teacher. THE TEACHER DISMISSES THE CLASS – NOT THE BELL.
  • It is each student’s responsibility to leave their area neat and clean both classroom and lab. Hold all trash until dismissed. Deposit your trash in the trashcan ONLY.
  • Students will show respect to their teacher, to their fellow classmates and school property.
  • Be courteous by raising your hand if you wish to speak.
  • There are to be no private conversations while the teacher is lecturing.
  • Student handbook policies will be followed and enforced.

LABORATORY SAFETY RULES

  • Read/listen to all directions and follow them carefully. If in doubt, ask for help.
  • NOopen toed shoes, excessively loose fitting clothes, or loose long hair.
  • NO food or drink is allowed in the laboratory.
  • Know about the chemicals and hazards associated with your laboratory experiment or activity.
  • Wear personal protective equipment, as appropriate.
  • Notify the teacher immediately in case of an accident, no matter how minor.
  • Maintain a clean, neat workplace, being sure to wash the lab table at the end of each lab in

preparation for the next student. Dispose of wastes in the proper containers.

  • Never taste, touch or smell any of the chemicals.
  • Never perform unauthorized experiments.
  • Never remove materials or equipment from the laboratory.
  • Respect the rights of the living animals in the lab by refraining from poking, jabbing, teasing,

feeding, or any act that might cause them fear or harm.

  • Refrain from all practical jokes and horseplay as they could result in serious harm to them

self or to others.

Lab safety is of the utmost importance and inappropriate behavior will result in the students’ removal from the lab and a zero for the assignment. There are no exceptions given and no makeup is possible in this scenario. In addition, serious infractions will be referred immediately to the student’s Assistant Principal and parental contact made.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES

Upon entry into the classroom, BEFORE the tardy bell rings . . .

•Cell phones will be turned off, remain off and in backpack.

•Food and drink (water is the exception) will be thrown away or put away into student’s backpack.

•Students will place field trip information, academic eligibility forms, etc. in the basket-awaiting signature.

•Students will turn in their homework assignments or late work (with parental documentation).

•Student will get pencils sharpened, and class materials out.

Class beginswhen the tardy bell rings. At that time . . .

•Students will be in their assigned seats, AND quiet.

•Students will be doing bell work.

During teacher led discussions/lecture . . .

•Students will be courteous by raising their hand if they wish to speak.

•Students will show respect to their teacher and to their fellow classmates by not interrupting them while they

arespeaking.

•Students will have no private conversations while the teacher is lecturing or while other persons are speaking.

During testing . . .

•Students will keep their eyes on their own paper.

•Students will keep their answer sheet covered.

•Students will not talk or take out any other materials from the time tests are handed out until all tests arepicked up.

•If a cell phone goes off during testing OR student attempts to make a call OR send a message, student’s paper will

be immediately taken and they will receive a zero, NO QUESTIONS, NO ARGUMENT and NO EXCEPTIONS

WILL BE GIVEN.

When the bell rings at the end of class. . .

•Teacher will release students.

•Students will check their area and pick up trash.

•Students will deposit their trash in the trashcan ONLY.

•Students will pick up signed field trip information, academic eligibility forms, etc. from the basket.

Failure to follow classroom procedures, behavior guidelines and rules will result in the following

progression of actions . . .

  1. Student – Teacher conference
  2. Loss of one conduct point AND/OR parent contact.
  3. Parent contact, loss of 5 class participation points AND/OR referral to students Assistant Principal AND/OR guidance.
  4. Consecutive violations will result in Assistant Principal referrals AND class participation points deducted

per each incident.

Notes: Based upon the magnitude of the infraction, disciplinary action taken may escalate immediately to steps 3 & 4.
