Johnston County 4-H ’12 Summer Fun Schedule

4-H Summer Fun is a collection of educational workshops and hand-on activities planned especially for Johnston County youth. This program is designed to give youth positive learning opportunities and focus on developing life skills. 4-H activities are open to youth ages 5-19 as of January 1st, 2012, but please pay close attention to class ages, descriptions, class limit, fees, dates and times.

Youth do NOT have to be in 4-H to participate in 4-H Summer Fun

Registration Date/Time

Registration dates 4-H members May 7th - 11th - Open to non 4-H members May 14th - 18th.

Registration will be at the Extension Office. (No registrations will be accepted by telephone.)

Policy and Procedures

*Registration requires payment, 4-H Enrollment form, Code of Conduct (read and initial the enrollment form), Summer Fun registration form, and NOTARIZED Medical Release form to be turned in before a child’s name can be placed on the list. Forms may be picked up at our office, Johnston County CES, 2736 NC 210 HWY, Smithfield, NC 27577 or downloaded at

* All forms and payment are due by May 18th to hold a spots.

*All fees are non-refundable unless the class is cancelled.

*Parents/guardians must sign the child in and out each day of camp.

No registrations will be accepted by telephone.

Refunds/Cancellations

Refunds for cancellations will be made within a month after it’s canceled. In the event of a cancellation, you will be notified as soon as possible.

Punctuality

Participants can arrive no more than 10 minutes prior to the start time of each activity, and should be picked up no later than 10 minutes after the activity is scheduled to end.

When traveling, participants who arrive more than 5 minutes late may be left and no refund will be given.

Payment

Prepayment is required to reserve a space. Checks should be made payable to, Johnston County 4-H. All forms and payment are due by May 18thto hold spots.

There is a $25.00 service charge for returned checks.

Volunteers are needed at some of the camps.

Knit Savvy

June 11 & 122:00pm – 4:00pm Location: Livestock Arena

Participants will learn basic stitches, how to make sure stitches are on the needle properly and choosing the proper yarn for your projects. On day one, you’ll take your project home to continue practicing what you learned. When you come back on day two your work will be checked for accuracy and mistakes fixed before you continue. The fee covers the cost of your needles to take home and yarn.

Summer Dayz at Lazy O

June 13 9:00am-1:00pm Location: Meet at Lazy O Farm

Have fun learning about cows, seed and your food. You will make ice cream and butter. Plant seeds in dirt to take home and watch grow. Visit barnyard animals and take a hayride. All this and more while getting a little taste of farm life. Then, have some fun Diggin for Gemstones and Fossils. Your bucket is filled with soil containing fossils and gemstones. As you sift through, identify your items with our ID chart and help from adults. Bring a bag lunch and drink.

Cape Fear – Atlantic Voyage

June 187:00am – 5:30pmLocation: Carolina Beach

This excursion provided by Carolina Ocean Studies will be great for sighting dolphins and discovering marine life caught in a shrimp net. We will fish 3 miles offshore over sunken ships that provide a rich habitat for numerous species of fish. Come learn about the marine life that is collected, which often includes numerous species of fish, crabs, echinoderms, and sea anemones. We will be traveling by School Bus with Harnett County Youth and Adults as well. However parents attending are welcome to drive, just indicate your preference at registration. Please bring a change of clothes, sunscreen and bathing suit, one piece for girls, or t-shirt to cover bikini, trunks for boys, with t-shirt, and some sort of shoes that can get wet. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Bring your lunch.

Sew Simple

June 199:00am – 3:00pmLocation: Extension Office Lab

Participants will learn to work with simple patterns, cut fabrics, operate a sewing machine & use an iron to press seams. Everyone will make an elastic waist skirt for summer. Bring your own 45” wide cotton/cotton blend fabric. (Size 4-6 needs 1 yard), (size 8, 1 yard), (size 10-12, 1-½ yards) and (size 14 needs 1-¾ yard). All other supplies will be provided.

Catch of the Day

Participants will learn water safety & fish anatomy, go fishing and learn to scale and clean their catch. Everyone will make a fish print to take home. Bring your own pole/rod ready to fish (hook-weight & cork) Bring lunch, snacks, drinks, lots of water, & sunscreen. Wear close toe shoes, NO SANDALS.

Art Camp

June 25, 26 & 27 9:00am-12:00pmLocation: Livestock arena

This is a three-day art camp taught by a local artist. Participants may use a variety of media such as Pencil & Conte', Charcoal, Water Color and/or Pen & Ink.

The art show Wednesday 11:00am is open for parents, siblings and grandparents to hear and view what each child learned and did at this camp.

What’s It Gonna BEE? Come’n See

Learn about bees from the experts! Make a "MAGIC" bee and see what a beehive looks like up close without the danger of getting stung. Learn all about bees from the experts play bee related games and have fun. We’re gonna make ICE CREAM in a bag, plus we have live bees!

Wooly Crafts

North Carolina 4-H Congress

July 16 - 19 Location: NCSU & McKimmon Center, Raleigh

Teens from all over North Carolina will be coming together to participate in educational experiences like, speakers, discussion groups, workshops and more. They will also be electing new District and State 4-H Officers. Johnston County has a candidate for Southeast District VP, so join us learning more about the political process as we campaign for her office. This even is an excellent way to develop and exercise leadership skills through serving on committees and participating on the Community Service Opportunities throughout the four days. In addition youth will have great food, fun and lots of dancing. You’ll stay on campus at NCSU in Raleigh. Clover Cash may be used to pay for this event. Deadline is June 29th, and payment must accompany registration.

Leadership Challenge

Would you like to be a better student leader? Come learn the Five practices for exemplary leaders and build on the skills you already have, while having a fun time with other youth. The workshop is based on the book “The Student Leadership Challenge” by Kouzes and Posner. Take your Student Leadership Inventory and dive in to the five practices: Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. Wacky Science

Plan to have fun learning about science while making projects and conducting experiments. Participants will make items they can take home. Individual and team competitions will add to the excitement. Come make slime, a chicken squawker, make an explosion, perform test with “acid”, and learn about physics and electricity. Join us as we have lots of “Wacky Science” fun.

Cloverbud Cooking Camp

Participants will learn basic cooking skills, measuring, reading recipes, making menus & kitchen safety. Everyone will take home his or her own kitchen utensils.

Card Delight

Learn different techniques to make homemade Greeting Cards you’ll

take home. Everyone will make a stamped card that’s chalk or marker colored. You will make cards using torn paper, cut outs, dimensional flowers and other elements. Come prepared to stamp, cut, paste and lots of other new techniques. Optional: If you have rubber stamps, punches or other items you want to use, feel free to bring them for your use or to share.

Southeast District Citizenship Academy

August 10 8:30am – 4:00pm Location: Duplin County Ext.Office

This class will teach teens about different aspects of citizenship and local government. Participants will attend workshops and listen to guest speakers. They will also have a chance to voice their opinions about current youth issues in their county and how they can be addressed. Cost includes transportation from the Johnston County Extension office in Smithfield, lunch, snacks, materials and presenters. Clover Cash can be used to help pay for this event. Registration is due July 27, 2012.

This class focuses on the heritage and history of the North Carolina. There will be a 15-minute film, a guided tour of the museum gallery and grounds then we willdip candles, make pinecone bird feeders, spin & card wool and enjoy traditional wagon rides.
