FOLLOW-UP/ACTION

1.  Minutes of Prior Meeting:
Date: 2/24/05
Date: 3/10/05 / Appd: w/Cor No Action
2.  Announcements from the Chair/Vice Chair:
Thoman/Mack / Mack: VP Berry recommended that the Library be moved under her jurisdiction and this was done.
Thoman: Allied Health is voting to appoint one chair for the area. Mack noted that one dept. chair can still speak for all four departments. However, Thoman noted that one program director makes decisions for each program area, so there can’t be one person representing all four areas. / None
3.  CIPD Report: Thoman / None
4. Articulation Report: Pantell / None

Discussion:
OSAH Courses: Najee noted that he does BERT (Building and Emergency Response Team) training for Kaiser Health Plan employees to respond the workplace emergencies. He is presenting courses in four major areas: Emergency/fire safety, CPR/first aid, light search and rescue/bomb-threat management, and workplace safety/ violence prevention, each for 0.5 unit. These four courses are offered for a total of two units which leads to a certificate issued by his company. Initially, the training will be offered to Kaiser employees, under contract edu-cation; however, it can be offered to other employers. He is a lead trainer for Kaiser. The program can also be taught for Peralta staff and students. Further discussion took place about contract education vs. regular FTES classes. Harding noted that each of these courses is structured to be offered as either one-day workshops for 8 hours or as two one-half day workshops for 4 hours.
Nurad 210: Bracy noted that there is a need for acute-care workers in the healthcare field. McFarland noted that she has received requests from acute-care facilities, such as Alameda Hospital, to offer acute-care training to certified nurse assistants because of California’s new nurse staffing ratios (one registered nurse for each five patients in particular areas of care). Harding also noted that a certificate program in Acute Care Nurse Assistant needs to be defined, much as was recently done for the Certified Nurse Assistant/Home Health Aide certificate. Following a discussion of the hours needed for training, the units/hours were lowered to 8 units for 6 hours lecture and 6 hours lab, which was still well above the minimum required for training.
Follow-up/Action: All OSAH courses were approved as presented; Nurad 210 was approved as corrected to 8 units, 6 hours lecture and 6 hours lab.

Discussion:
Child Development Courses: Olsen noted that the department reviewed all prerequisite information for Child Development courses to determine if Chdev 50 or 51 (the beginning/core courses in the program) were needed as prerequisites to other Child Development courses. Also, they are hardwiring (activating) all prerequisite requirements to make sure students are adequately prepared and meet minimum requirements in all Child Development courses and can progress in the program.
Engl 201A-201B: Harding noted that this is a correction to the prerequisite information previously approved for Engl 201A to clarify that Engl 252B at Merritt and Engl 259D at Vista meet both the reading and the writing requirement parts of the prerequisite statement. This information/correction was confirmed by Ann Elliott (Merritt) and Jenny Lowood (Vista). Thoman inquired if there were a simpler way to state the prerequisite information, but Harding noted that this conforms with computer logic in the use of “and/or” statements, i.e., in computer and math logic, “or” statements are executed before “and” statements.
Follow-up/Action: All course changes were approved as presented.

Discussion:
Course Deactivations: Harding noted that most of the courses recommended for deactivation have not been offered in five or more years, or there is some problem with them in their current format, e.g., Chdev 64 needs to be rewritten/restructured, while Envst 801 presents liability problems, and Posci 15 lost its CSU “American Institutions” certification (Posci 1 is offered instead). Felzer gave a brief history of the Biol 801 and Envst 20A-20B-20C and 801 courses and noted that the Envst 20A-20B-20C series were the first courses added to the Environmental Studies program in the 1960s. However, they haven’t been offered for a number of years as his focus in more recent years has been on studying and offering courses about areas with a Mediterranean climate like the Bay Area’s.
Follow-up/Action: All course deactivations were approved as presented, except Posci 15 which was pulled from the agenda until Thoman has a chance to speak to Hector Cordova about the course, as he has requested that no courses in his department be deactivated at the present time.
9. PROGRAM ADDS:
None / Add
10. PROGRAM CHANGES:
None / Change
11. PROGRAM DEACTIVATIONS:
Bus† / Administrative Office Systems and Applications Certificate of Completion / Deact.
F05
Discussion:
Administrative Office Systems and Applications Certificate: Harding noted that when this program was reinstated, it was not noted at the time that there was not an approved certificate for this program at the state level, i.e., the certificate was not on Merritt’s Inventory of Approved Programs (only the AA was listed). Anita Black, during the program review process, will determine at a later time if a certificate is needed in this area. In the meantime, the certificate notation needs to be removed from the catalog.
Follow-up/Action: Action was approved as presented.
12. POLICY/OTHER ISSUES:
1. / Umbrella Courses in Biology/Environ-mental Studies / Modify catalog entries
Discussion:
Umbrella Courses in Biol/Envst: Thoman is recommending that the umbrella courses for Felzer’s Biology/ Environment Studies courses (i.e., Biol/Envst 60A-H and 70A-H series of courses) be removed from the catalog because the entries are confusing. Harding noted that they are essentially the same as selected topics listings – they are just place holders for actual courses that need to be approved and listed individually. Discussion ensued about the process and the assigning of permanent catalog numbers to guarantee transferability. It was agreed to modify the catalog listings by removing the units and course description information and to state instead: “The following courses are offered under this rubric.” If none are presently offered, the statement will say: “No courses are presently offered under this rubric.”
Follow-up/Action: Action was approved as presented. Catalog entries will be modified as noted above.
