Candidacy Application Process

Registration for the 2017-2018 academic year

Acceptance committee interviews with applicants of all tracks will take place on: January 18-19, 2017, May 17-18 2017, September 13-14, 2017.

Applicants for the direct doctoral track for bachelor’s degree holders

Students who are interested in submitting applications to the direct doctoral track shall should send the School of Graduate Studies office the following documents, via e-mail and in printed form:

1. Two signed and filled application forms (https://en-med.tau.ac.il/resources):

a) General Application Form for Doctoral Degree with a picture.

b) Direct Track PhD Application Form.

2. A separate file with your CV and list of publications.

3. Two letters of recommendation. The referencee should send them directly to the following email: .

Grade transcripts (including weighted course grade average, final grade, and thesis grade from all your degrees), your bachelor's diploma or confirmation of your eligibility for a degree, originals or authentic copies, from the institution you attended. Photocopies are acceptable only following presentation and confirmation of the original diplomas in Hebrew or English. Diplomas in languages other than Hebrew or English must be accompanied by written approval from the TAU Student Registration Center.

5. A summary of your final project / seminar project.

6. Name, telephone number and address of contact person (English or Hebrew speaking) abroad who can be approached in case of emergency.

After preliminary assessment and screening, candidates who meet the admission requirements will be invited for an interview with the acceptance committee. The committee will examine the knowledge that the applicant has acquired during his previous studies, his ability to cope with questions that require creative thinking, analytical ability, understanding basic principles of research methods, and other topics as defined in the applicant’s Research Statement.

Prior to the interview the applicant must prepare a presentation as described in the application form. The interview takes approximately 15 minutes. The acceptance committee will reply within two weeks of the interview date.

Applicants for the regular doctoral track

New program for outstanding students!!!

The purpose of the program is to train motivated students with outstanding abilities for research, to advance groundbreaking biomedical research.

Admission to the program will be based on student qualifications and an admissions interview. During the interview applicants will be required to present their final / master’s project or other relevant scientific project they choose, and to demonstrate knowledge and intellectual ability in the sphere of the project they present.

Advisor

Applicants can be accepted to the outstanding students track without having an advisor at the time of the interview. The student must indicate in his Research Statement potential laboratories for research in the Faculty of Medicine. The student must also find an advisor by the time he/she begins his/her studies.

Scholarships

Students in the Outstanding Students program will receive an increased stipend for the entire period of their studies (contingent on the advisor’s participation). Continuation of the stipend from one year to the next will depend on the student’s progress report and advancement through the doctoral stages, as is standard practice. The Scholarships Committee of the School for Graduate Studies will be in charge of dispensing stipends.

Criteria for acceptance into the Outstanding Students Program in the regular doctoral track for students with a master’s degree:

Candidates may apply for the program if they are outstanding students who received a weighted grade of at least 90 for their bachelor’s degree; and a weighted grade of at least 90 for their master’s degree and a grade of at least 93 on their final project. The admissions committee may consider applicants with grades lower than 90 (but higher than 87) for bachelor’s degree courses according to the student’s special accomplishments: published article, presentation of groundbreaking research, creative and interdisciplinary thinking, proven special abilities, knowledge or planning for the doctorate (based on the interview and/or recommendations).

This track is for students who have completed their studies in life sciences and medicine; outstanding students from other disciplines will be required to take supplementary courses.

Criteria for acceptance into the direct track Outstanding Students Program:

Candidates may apply for the program if they are outstanding students who received a weighted grade of at least 90 for their bachelor’s degree. The admissions committee may consider applicants with grades lower than 90 (but higher than 87) according to the student’s special accomplishments: published article, presentation of groundbreaking research, creative and interdisciplinary thinking, proven special abilities, knowledge or planning for the doctorate (based on the interview and/or recommendations).

Students who received their bachelor’s degree in life sciences and medicine may be admitted to the program without any supplementary courses. Outstanding students from other disciplines will be required to take supplementary courses based on a list of such courses prepared by the doctoral committee of the Faculty of Medicine.

Master’s degree students may apply for the program if they completed the first year of their master’s studies with at least 18 credits and an average grade of at least 90, if they received a weighted grade of at least 90 for their bachelor’s degree, have completed a research project and have particularly notable achievements. The admissions committee may consider applicants with grades lower than 90 in their bachelor’s degree courses (but higher than 87) according to the student’s special accomplishments: published article, presentation of groundbreaking research, creative and interdisciplinary thinking, proven special abilities, knowledge or planning for the doctorate (based on the interview and/or recommendations).

For students who completed their studies in disciplines other than life sciences and medicine, we recommend applying to the project after taking supplementary courses. Candidates will not be permitted to apply, nor will they be accepted into the program, if they must take more than 10 credits of supplementary courses.
