National Curriculum Overview

The ‘basic’ school curriculum includes the ‘national curriculum’, religious education and sex education.

The national curriculum is a set of subjects and standards used by primary and secondary schools so children learn the same things. It covers what subjects are taught and the standards children should reach in each subject.

Key stage 1 and 2

Compulsory national curriculum subjects at primary school are:

  • English
  • maths
  • science
  • design and technology
  • history
  • geography
  • art and design
  • music
  • physical education (PE), including swimming
  • information and communication technology (ICT)

Schools can develop their own ICT curricula or follow the programmes of study. They must also provide religious education (RE) but parents can ask for their children to be taken out of the whole lesson or part of it. We currently use the Cornwall Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education.

Schools often also teach:

  • personal, social and health education (PSHE)
  • citizenship
  • modern foreign languages

Copies of the curriculum overviews for each year can be found below.

As a school we have made the decision to incorporate the Inspire Curriculum, alongside Hamilton Trust planning. Inspire was developed by Cornwall Learning and Hamilton Trust is a UK charity working to support high quality teaching and learning.

The school curriculum is committed to:

  • Achievement and success
  • Learning and life skills
  • Creative thinking, innovation and enterprise
  • Learning through exploration
  • Stretch and challenge
  • Developing working memory
  • Creativity
  • Independent and learner-led learning
  • Collaborative learning
  • Outdoors and nature
  • Applied learning

Information about the Early Years can be found via the 'Early Years' link.

We know that our priority as a school lies in ensuring children gain good levels of literacy and numeracy that they can apply across all areas of learning and in developing independent learners who enjoy learning. This underpins every aspect of our curriculum development. Our relentless drive to raise standards in literacy and numeracy are at the heart of our approach to teaching and learning, reflecting the needs of our children in preparation for the future.

We welcome your thoughts and ideas about the curriculum that we deliver.

Yours faithfully,

Lucy Wandless
