Socratic Seminar Questions on 1984
2ND Period Fall 2015
- O’Brien says that he is trying to make Winston sane, but if they both think the same, how can Winston be a lunatic, but O’Brien be sane?
Talazia o’brien is sane because he thinks he is sane on page 229 winston has a weak mentality 225 Winston thinks he is crazy matter of opinion
Morgan O’brien sees through though crime as insanity and is trying to cure Winston of it 209
Carlie o’brien is sane because he uses double think Winston can’t make himself see more
209 o’brien is mantipulating Winston makes Winston believe he is crazy Skylar
Lacey agree with Carlie o’brien doesn’t act upon his thoughts Winston acts upon his thoughts
Jade throughout the whole story 211 doesn’t see O’Brien sane compared to Winston
Felicia O’Brien says Winston is mentally insane O’Brien can make himself see different things
Kaylee O’Brien like the rest of the party members think the insane thing in their world is to not follow Big Brother and love him 209
Naven I don’t think Winston and O’Brien think the same at all 204 because Winston hates the party O’Brien doesn’t
Claire I think O’Brien is only agreeing with his opinions to manipulate him into trusting him 141 o’brien
Suzie don’t think the same O’Brien believes in the party O’Brien is sane according to party
Mackenzie O’Brien is in control so he is sane 210
- What is your impression of emotions under the rule of the Party? For example, on page 89, Julia gives Winston a note that says she loves him, but she’d never even spoken to him before. What does this show about the mental health capacity of Party members?
Felicia the party suppress the emotion of others when people experience an emotion they don’t know what to do page 57
Claire I don’t think the people of Oceania mean page 65
Suzie 101 agree to be lovers to naive to know what love is 57 don’t know what love is because it is forbidden
Jade the mental health capacity must be pretty advanced
Skylar agree with Felicia and Claire blinded by the true meaning of love feels love its not
Lacey all emotion is forbidden 104 their love is more about their rebellion of the party Winston only loves her because she is corrupt
Carlie 137 agrees with everyone their mental health capacity party is suppressing them
Ella page 57 rebellion by having a relationship [
Talazia agrees with everyone rebellion towards the party spontaneous disagrees as well their love doesn’t have to deal with their mental capacity doesn’t have any relation to the fact really smart because they can use double think
Victoria no one has the full control of their emotions
Morgan act like children don’t understand their emotions over grown children saying I love you
Kaylee when one of them has more rebellion thoughts they long for each other
- Why does Winston admire O’Brien after all the pain he inflicts upon him?
Suzie page 68 Winston admires O’Brien in chapter 3 Winston is learning from O’Brien he is understanding why
Ernest agrees with SuzieWinston admires O’Brien’s knowledge
Felicia 207 W felt like O was his protector O was the only that controlled everything O told W he would save him
Katlynn Winston felt O was the only person that understood him and can relate to him unlike Julia
Chasity W though O was still on his side because he believed o was on his side he trusted him it was also manipulation like o says on page 208 his purpose was no to punish him Winston thought hood would come out of it
Lacey O took W pain away 208 he was grateful for o for stopping everything W felt like he can connect with O
Skylar 209 W feels like he is safe even with pain being inflicted upon him
Kaylee 144 W has a hard time grasping that o will not be his savior in the end because he and big brother were his only sense of hope and obligation
Jade W admires O because O has been completely aware of his thoughts and actions
Naven W admires O because he was forced to physical and mental abuse and that influenced him
- Do you think the Party’s real objective is to cure the people?
Felicia I think part of their objective is to cure the people but the main part was power
Lacey I don’t think the party is curing the people there is nothing wrong with the people just changing them for their benefit it’s all about power
Claire I think the party’s main objective was to cure the people but in a twisted way its about power and control 220 they think they are curing them but they aren’t
Suzie doesn’t cure people brings them to room 101 so the people don’t over throw them curing people = staying in power curing the people is keeping them dumb
Ernest not interested in the good of others don’t want to cure the people just want the power
Kaitlynn party’s perspective they are curing them not to cure the people but to twist their mind
Skylar
Carlie the only reason they cure the people is to keep their power being martyers is what make people rebel
Kaylee they are just trying to get more power don’t pay attention to the proles because the proles will follow
Ella page 17opposite like war is peace so curin the people is a cover for the opposite objective of controlling the proles like all the other hidden meanings
Chasity disagrees the people think they are being cured party knows they aren’t curing the people trying to get rid of human nature
Morgan trying to get rid of thought crime trying to break their enemies
- What details portray how O’Brien was able to constantly spy on Winston?
- Was Julia actually on Winston’s side or was she planning to betray him the whole time?
- Why do you think Winston was so attracted to Julia? Was it just sexual or was it something more?
- Do you think Winston saw O’Brien’s betrayal coming?
Carlie no because down to the last minute when winston was in the jail cell he thought they had got o too when he saw him
Jade no but I do w forgets him 226-245 o shows signs of helpfulness w never loved o so deeply because o was a friend and stopped the pain 208
Talazia disagree did know he was coming 197 w was actually in denial the whole time used doublethink on him totally blocked o betrayal out his mind
Naven doesn’t think w saw o betrays coming because after he got the book he was at home with his lover who was topless saying aww this is life and he though I’m good but he wasn’t good 127
Lacey agrees with carlie I don’t think w saw o betrayl coming because w was unaware of the gaurds behind o when he saw him in the cell
Felicia I agree with talazia because o was an impotant aspect of w life he knew the dreams he had o menat something but he did not know why it was important 201
- On page 220, O’Brien states power is gained by making people suffer; however, he tells Winston on page 208 his purpose is not to punish him. What do you think the difference is between O’Brien’s two statements?
- Do you believe that the gin and cigarettes had chemicals that allowed the Party to be in control of the Party members minds? Why or why not?
