Venetian Fair in Ludwigsburg
Vibrant Festival from September 9 to 11, 2016
A vibrant festival awash with gorgeous colours and joyful celebration – that’s the Venetian Fair in Ludwigsburg. From September 9 to 11, the Baroque market square is transformed into a magical fantasy world:thanks to hundreds of colourful costumes, a fantastic mix of acrobatics, music, street theatre, fire magic, buffoonery, dancing and singing, and anenchanting Venetian backdrop.
At the grand performers' parade through the city centre and the march past the gondola footbridge, the gorgeous costumes are on display in all their glory:gold-embroidered silk gowns shine next to bizarre avant-garde costumes; splendid masks catch the eye along with marvellous head-dresses and elaborately ornamented fans. Many of the roughly 1000 masked and costumedrevellers also attend the famous Venice Carnival. No costume? No problem! Simply buy a mask or fan on the spot and join the fantastic revel in your mysterious guise.
Outstanding international and national groups of artists perform in various locations. Some may take your breath away with powerful, spectacular artistic feats while others will touch your heart with poetically gentle or rousingly comedic performances. The programme includes stilt walkers and street artists as well as musical performances and Nouveau Circe, puppet shows and fire acts. Waltzes and line dances invite audiences to join in on the dancing fun.The festival will culminate in a fireworks display bathing the market square in magical light.
The Venetian Fair is a particularly wonderful experience for children:Colourful dream worlds and theatre plays will kindle their imagination and playfulness. At the make-up booths, they are transformed into radiant butterflies, glittering princesses or ferocious lions. But this experience is not only for the little ones – the grown-ups, too, can slip into their dream role.
The exquisite arts and crafts market is another feast for the eye.On all three days of the fair, more than 50 peddlers, some of whom have travelled all the way from Venice for this event, offer traditional wares from the famous city on the lagoon: masks and fabrics, Murano glass, hand-crafted wood carvings and jewellery.
Of course, there’s also no shortage of culinary delights: Selected regional caterers indulge visitors with fine Mediterranean treats. The delicacies on offer range from robust comfort food all the way to exquisite gourmet fare.
The Venetian Fair originated with Ludwigsburg’s Duke Carl Eugen:during a trip to Italy, the ruler enjoyed the Venetian Masquerade so much that he imported it to his residential city in 1768.His nobles at court and exuberant commoners let themselves get carried away for days – not unlike visitors of the Venetian Fair today.
