HIP Individual Project – Supervisor AllocationEmail Week 05

I urgently need to see those students who have not submitted a proposal/specification on Thursday6TH Nov - I will be available to all at 12-1in the Students Union - sandwich bar area.

Please visit the HND Individual Project website located on my staff page and review your posted project proposals and specifications.

Also review the 2. Project Supervision document

I have allocated supervisors to those students who have provided their project proposal (and specification).Note your supervisor initials in red.

The first attachment also indicates the above and also a summary of what you should have done and need to do.

Please contact your appointed supervisor and arrange to see them on Thursday 6th November 2008.

The second attachment (in particular section 2.4) covers the project supervision.

The ideal process for supervision should be:

  • Email in advance and arrange a convenient time for your supervision.
  • Meetings should be arranged fortnightly.Only if your supervisor is happy with your progress can this be extended.
  • Email weekly/fortnightly activity logs prior to meetings.
  • Meetings to last between 5-30 mins. Remember it is for you to provide evidence of work done.
  • Notify supervisors if you cannot arrange a meeting due to pressures of work etc.
  • Important - keep your supervisor up-to-date with progress - email is the best way.

As your project co-ordinator I am available via email. You will also need to email me if you want to see me during your lunch break.

  1. ADOPT A SUITABLE PROJECT METHODOLOGY

You have been advised to use a systems development and/or web developmentmethodology for your project. Why? Because this helps you to undertake a project through formal methods. Methodologies also provide use with chapters, sections and subsection required for project documentation.

Remember it is up to you to decide which parts of a methodologyare suitable for your project - not all may apply.Check out the Systems Development section online.

All systems methodologies encourage the use of some or all of the following CASE tools:

  • DFD
  • Data Dictionaries
  • Normalisation
  • Entity Relationship Diagrams
  • or any of the others tools which you may think are better for your particular project.

Check out SAD on my staff page.

Provide an introduction to the methodologies and tools used for your project. Do not expect the reader to be fully conversed in all matters.Remember its just an introductionand not a detailed discussion...the reader should consult the references provided if they requiremore information.

How should I structure thereport?

See the online Project report samples. Please note this year is a new scheme which requires the submission of 1 project report only.

Read through Anne Siddles - Writing Fromal Report- follow the advice, styles and structures recommended

Refresh yourself with MS Word Guidewhichdescribes some advanced facilities of Word that may be found useful when producing reports.

Then write you project report and organise your material within it as you see fit.

Make sure your report covers the ICA requirements in particular HIP feedback sheet and HIP criteria.
