I found this game online a number of years ago.
Divide the class into six groups.
Each group should then be assigned a country.
Each country will be given an envelope containing a trading card, detailing the quantities commodities they currently have and those that they need.
Their envelope will also contain trading cards that make up the quantities of commodities that they currently have (the cards are in small quantities to enable trading to take place).
Some countries will have more than enough of certain commodities.
Others will have large quantities of commodities they do not need at all (e.g. nuclear waste).
The aim of the game is for each group to trade with other countries to try and meet their requirements.
The students will learn:
- That some countries are in a much stronger trading position than others to start off
- That some poorer countries will be forced to accept nuclear waste in exchange for obtaining basic requirements such as food.
It is advisable to laminate both the trading cards and the commodity cards so that they can be reused.
Transition year students really enjoy this game.
