General Membership MeetingMinutes - FINAL
November 6, 2014
Call to Order:Judy East, President, called the meeting to order at 9:31 am. A quorum was present; sign in sheets are attached. Proper meeting notice was provided. Attendees were reminded about voting delegate forms. Local PTAs were thanked for auction basket donations and scholarship assessments.
Approval of Minutes/Correspondence: Minutes of the October 2, 2014 general membership meeting were approved.Correspondence from Athena Gordon, scholarship recipient, was read.Juli Rasmussen was congratulated on her quick response to the question hidden in the draft minutes notice.
TreasurerReport: GuiaVillavicencio, Treasurer, present the reconciled October treasurer report. Account balances are as follows: Operations $29,424.51, Scholarship $17,354.35,and PayPal $100.00.
Business:
PTSAs Donating for Other 501(c)(3)- Judy East reviewed guidelines for providing donations to other non-profit.
Local PTAs should review IRS articles of incorporation for its mission statement, as donations must be consistent with the defined mission. Donations should have a corresponding budget line. PTAs should exercise due diligence, i.e., the group’s mission consistent with the PTA’s mission.
Nominating Committee- Judy East reviewed the importance of the nominating committee role and guidelines for electing a nominating committee. Judy East asked for nominations from the floor. Jay Pulacode nominated Julie Haase. Julie accepted. Jason Rothkowitz nominated Roy Captain. Roy accepted. Allison DiGrassi nominated Patti Tornquist. Patti accepted. Julie Haase nominated Mary Mendlen. Mary accepted. Jay Pulacode nominated Julie Tribolet. Julie accepted. A ballot vote was used.
Julie Haase, Roy Captain, and Patti Tornquist were elected as the nominated committee. Mary Mendlen and Julie Tribolet where elected to serve as alternates.
Two nominating committee trainings have been scheduled:
- December 11, 12-1:30 pm, Sammamish room, LWRC
- January 26, 7-8:30 pm, Sammamish room, LWRC.
LWSD Partners:
Superintendent Report- JaneneFogard, Deputy Superintendent, , reported on behalf of the district. School safety was discussed and a debriefing on the recent Dickinson incident was provided.
Parents are encouraged to register at flashalert.net and to use the Flash Alert app on iPhone to receive emergency alerts from the district. The LWSD safety page on the district website was displayed. Anonymous safety tips can be called in to (866)548-3847, (866)LIVE-TIP.
JaneneFogard also gave report on the Long-Term Facilities Planning Task Force. Information is on the district website.
School Board – Jackie Pendergrass gave report on behalf of the school board. The boundary process was discussed. The school board has approved its legislative platform- full funding for basic education, school construction funding and bond requirements, funding for square footage, and flexibility in local control.
Leadership Development Activity – Small Group Case Studies
Attendees separated by Areas and discussed scenarios.
Reports:
President–Holiday guidelines from district were distributed in the meeting documents.
“You Rock” Award- Janice Vachépresented the November “You Rock” award to Lake Washington High School PTSA for its Pass the Pouch fundraiser. Susan McClung, Fundraising Chair, and Liz Hedreen, President, were recognized. Liz Hedreen accepted on behalf of Lake Washington High School PTSA.
Basket Auction- Amy Lofquist reported. PTAs were thanked for turning in their baskets. Council is going with a new approach with December 6thbasket auction close and gift-wrapping event. A raffle will be held at the December council meeting. The event flyer will be distributed to the schools. Student volunteers are needed for the day of the event.
Reflections- Jay Pulacode reviewed Reflections deadlines. Local PTA winners must be entered into the database by November 19th, 11:59 pm PT. PTAs are encouraged to enter the information as early as possible. November 21st is council turn in day, by appointment only.
Advocacy- The legislative report was tabled for next meeting.
Family and Community Engagement- Volunteer packing party dates will be available on the council website. Council will be holding a food drive at the December general membership meeting. Local PTAs are asked to bring canned soup and individually packaged snacks.
Sounders Day- Judy Eastreported that 789 tickets were purchased.Local PTAs with the top sales were: Alcott PTSA with 116 and Juanita El PTSA with 91.
Announcements:Julie Haase provided announcements.
- November 20th, 12-1 pm, Brown Bag,topic: district boundary process update.
- LWSF Grant Writing Workshop, November 20th, 4-5:30 pm, LWRC Morton Johnson.

- November 13th, PTA and the Law, Pacific Cascade Middle School, Issaquah, 6-9 pm. Registration starts at 5:30 pm.
- November 10th, AIM insurance payment due.
- November 15th tax return due. Thank you to Shelley Flores for completed council’s tax return.
- WSPTA has requested local PTAs to submit a “PTA Story”.
- Thank you to Inglewood Area for providing meeting refreshments.
