Maru-a-Pula (MaP) is a world-class school rooted in Botswana. Our mission is to serve the nation, the continent of Africa and the world, by preparing leaders who will serve their communities. Founded in 1972, MaP is a co-ed, independent day & boarding secondary school with a reputation as one of Africa’s premier academic institutions.

Located in the capital city of Gaborone, MaP offers rigorous preparation for the Cambridge IGCSE, AS and A-Level examinations, preparing students for entry to the world’s top universities.

WORLD CLASS ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS

Outstanding results position MaP as one of Africa’s top schools. Ourstudents broke records in 2015 with more than 60% A*s and As in the Cambridge A-level exams:

  • A record 20 students gained at least 3As at A-Level
  • 27 students earned 3As or more at AS-Level

EXCEPTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

• MaP offers generous financial aid to selected, academically capable, citizens. In addition,MaP hosts20 orphans and vulnerable children on full scholarships in 2016.

• Every year, outstanding Form 5 students are selected to attend top US private schools.

• In partnership with the Ministry of Education, over 50 of the nation’s best students do their A-Level studies at MaP.

MaP students are typically ambitious and eager to make a difference in the world. Our 2016 enrolment is a record 766students :

• 65% (493) are citizens of Botswana while 35% (273) are expatriates from 33 different nations.

• Our students enjoy exchanges with more than 20 schools in the USA, UK, China, Japan, Switzerland, France and Australia.

A TRADITION OF SERVICE

Our 44-year tradition of community service is unparalleled for a secondary school. Our students build sustained service partnerships through more than 35 different weekly projects. By teaching in primary schools, feeding destitute families, working with orphans or visiting the children’s ward of a hospital, MaP students learn more powerful lessons than those taught in classrooms.

AMAZING MARIMBAS & CREATIVE ARTS

Marimbas are an essential feature of MaP life, but they are just the most visible and audible of the many creative arts which are nurtured and celebrated here at our nationally famous Maitisong theatre. Maitisong hosts Botswana’s largest cultural festival and the annual President’s Concert.

PACE-SETTING PARTNERSHIPS

Every year, six exceptional Harvard undergraduates mentor MaP students for eight weeks in June and July. Four Princeton in Africa Teaching Fellows work with our students for a full year.

TOP-TIER UNIVERSITY PLACEMENTS

Stanford, the world’s most competitive university -- only 5% of applicants admitted -- has six MaP students currently; Cambridge, the UK’s most selective university, has four MaP students; the London School of Economics has three; two each attend Princeton and Columbia and more than 20 attend the University of Cape Town. Many have won scholarships with generous financial aid. 80% of our students attend university outside of Botswana.

OUTSTANDING SPORTS AND ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES

From basketball and karate to chess and debating, MaP students excel in local, regional and global competitions. In recent years, MaP has fielded national champion teams in netball, basketball and rugby. Our top athletes have represented Botswana in African and Olympic games.
