Structure for Standard Lesson

  • Before session commences, ensure good teaching environment – OHP, blinds, WB.
  • Check Health and Safety in classroom.
  • Complete register, indicate late arrivals with “L”.

Typical session routine

  • Recap from previous session and test/assessment if applicable
  • Introduce lesson
  • Useful to state reasons for lesson
  • Use at least 16 font for OHT, preferably sans serif typeface e.g. Arial (not Times)
  • State Aims and Objectives i.e. what you want students to learn/do/achieve by end of lesson (can be written on board) – not what you are going to teach/cover
  • If practical – cover Health and Safety
  • Question students to find previous knowledge – best to ask individuals rather than a free for all

End

  • Recap on lesson
  • Lead into next session
  • Brief late students on how to catch up
  • Ensure no one requires help

Helpful tips

  • Hole punch handouts
  • Write technical terms on board without being asked
  • Ensure OHP is not obstructing the whiteboard
  • Use lower case on OHTs and Whiteboard – Black on Blue

Practical Lessons/Sessions

  • Go through Health and Safety issues
  • Ensure all students have protective clothing – they should not take part without it
  • Ensure students are fully supervised – lesson must be stopped if the tutor leaves
  • Ensure all equipment is in good working order
  • Inform the relevant nominated person of any broken or damaged equipment
  • All equipment must be returned at the end of the session
  • All students must be doing something – practical, work-sheets etc.
