Course:Medical-Surgical Nursing
Course Description:
This 122-hour (120 theory, 2 lab) course introduces medical-surgical nursing. Theory includes care of patients with disease and/or a disorder of the respiratory, cardiovascular, hematologic, immune and lymphatic, neurologic systems, as well as acid-base and fluid and electrolyte imbalances. You will be introduced to new trends in the medical profession as well as psychosocial aspects of nursing. Exposure to complementary and alternative therapies, surgery, pain,and oncology management is covered. An overview of home health care, medical office, rehabilitation care and hospice nursing is provided. Nursing responsibilities in preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care are presented. Concurrent clinical experience is provided in surgery, medical-surgical, home health, medical office and community nursing settings.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student will, with a minimum of 80% average on written exams and assignments, be able to:
1.Identify the various stages/phases of adult life.
2.Discuss patient care based on economics of health care, heath maintenance
organizations, and the disbursement system of Medicare.
3.Discuss alternative medicine and its effect on patient outcomes.
4.Involve the patient in identifying needs related to total care of the patient.
5.Involve the family in identifying patient needs related to the total care of the
patient.
6.Identify patient needs for patient teaching.
7.Contribute to the development of a plan for patient teaching as related to the
patient’s disease/disorder/treatment.

Methods of Teaching/Learning:
Instructional methods used in this course include 14 Learning Activity Packets (LAPs) discussion, audiovisual aids, video-taped instructor lectures, powerpoint lectures, computer-assisted instruction, required readings, one-on-one instruction, laboratory demonstrations, and written assignments.
Instructional Hours:
Medical-Surgical Nursing is offered during Level III. Instruction comprises 120theory hours and 2 lab hours with concurrent clinical experience of 288 hours.
Relation to Clinical Experience:
Concurrent clinical experience includes 140.5 hours on a medical-surgical floor (with medication administration integrated), 20 hours in the OR/ASU, 29.5 hours in a home health/hospice agency, 20 hours in community nursing, and 38 hours in a medical office. Clinical grades for intermediate nursing are averaged with maternity nursing (40 hours). However, you must maintain an 80% average in each clinical area: e.g. 80% in medical-surgical clinicals, 80% in medical office nursing, etc.
Method of Evaluation:
Evaluation of the student’s progress is determined by raw score received on LAP exams, assignments, and quizzes. You must achieve a minimum of 80% to successfully complete this course.
