Job Summary
This position is responsible for the administration of the Bryan-Lang Historical Library including day-to-day operations, staff management, research assistance, and preservation and management of library holdings.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Interacts with the Library Board and executes decisions on their behalf: informs on conditions and operations of the library; plans, formulates, and recommends for approval basic policies, programs and procedures that will further the objective of the library; develops specific policies, procedures, and programs to implement established general policies; executes and manages authorized grants, contracts, and commitments; develops, recommends, and operates within an approved annual budget; participates in meetings of the Library Board, as well as other local historical, library, and civic groups as necessary.
- Prepares daily operational policies and procedures including housekeeping, equipment maintenance, secretarial duties, etc.; as well as develops comprehensive policies and procedures regarding the storage and proper curatorial care of records and information pertaining to permanent historical materials maintained by the library.
- Maintains a current knowledge base by reading relevant literature and attending related seminars and conferences.
- Performs other support duties: assists with collection and building surveys to determine holdings and environmental needs; communicates with vendors regarding services, contracts, and supplies; monitors and maintains supplies, equipment, and reference materials, and orders or reorders as necessary; monitors documentation on treatment activities and accumulates annual statistics for the production of periodic reports; oversees the maintenance of the building and physical environment in which the materials are housed.
- Performs editorial work; provides guidance in and assists with printing activities.
- Serves as training coordinator for the library.
- Maintains effective public relations with public organizations, private organizations, and governments; ensures that the positions, objectives, regulations, and policies of the library are understood by the general public.
- Develop and present programs on historical subjects to local schools, civic clubs, and other public or private organizations as necessary.
- Arranges and describes the archives and manuscript collections in accordance with nationally accepted standards and library policies; plans space usage so as to most efficiently display and organize the collection for use.
- Supervises and coordinates the preservation activities of the assistant archivist, archives aide, and volunteers, in addition to performing firsthand preventative and remedial preservation treatment activities for collections held by the library.
- Develops and maintains a comprehensive disaster plan for the library.
- Identifies outside funding sources, both public and private, and prepares proposals for submission to granting agencies to further library efforts.
- Manages all library sales, including copies, books, copies, etc.
- Identifies and analyzes records and materials of historical significance to the history of Camden County, Coastal Georgia, Southeast Georgia, and the State of Georgia.
- Coordinates and conducts the accessioning and de-accessioning of records and information in various media formats into and out of the library collection.
- Provides guidance and assistance to researchers and completes special research projects, as necessary.

Education, Experience, and Certification Requirements
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
- Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits of the department in order to direct and coordinate work within the department, usually interpreted to require three to five years of related experience.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
