AHOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND HARTSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS DIRECTOR PHYLLIS CAROL GRIGGS FOR OVER THIRTY YEARS OF OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP TO THE ATHLETICS PROGRAM AT HARTSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL AND TO CONGRATULATE HER UPON BEING SELECTED AS ATHLETICS DIRECTOR OF THE YEAR BY THE SOUTH CAROLINA ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATORS ASSOCIATION.

Whereas, it is altogether fitting that the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives pause in their deliberations to honor Athletics Director Phyllis Carol Griggs for being chosen Athletics Director of the Year by the South Carolina Athletic Administrators Association (SCAAA); and

Whereas, a native of Hartsville, Phyllis Griggs graduated from Hartsville High School in 1975 where she played basketball andtennis for the Lady Red Foxes; and

Whereas, she played tennis for Winthrop Universitywhile earning a bachelor’s degree in physical education and health in 1979; and

Whereas, in 1980, she began her career as an educator at Hartsville Junior High school, and in 1982, she began what has become more than thirty years of teaching and coaching at her high school alma mater; and

Whereas, Athletics Director Griggs earned a master’s degree in sportsscience in 1991 from the United States Sports Academy, and in her twentyfour years of coaching, she has coached girls tennis for twenty years, basketball for twelve years, track and softball for eight years each, and soccer for two years; and

Whereas, twelve times she has been recognized as the Region Coach of the Year for her success as a tennis coach and twice for her work as a softball coach; and

Whereas, in her eight years as athletics director, she has beennamed the 200809 Region VI Class AAAA Athletics Director of the Year, the 201112 Region VI Class AAA Athletics Director of the Year, the 201213 Region VI Class AAA Athletics Director of the Year, andthe 201213 State Athletics Director of the Year by the SCAAA; and

Whereas, a faithful member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Phyllis Griggs serves on the board of trustees, and she has served the Hartsville community on the Heart Walk Committee for the American Heart Association and the Relay For Life Hartsville Committee; and

Whereas, a member of the Hartsville Rotary Club, she has been honored as a Paul Harris Fellow, and she was named both the Teacher of the Year for Hartsville High School and the Darlington County School District Honor Roll Teacher for the 20052006 school year; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the esteem and credit that Phyllis Griggs has brought to Hartsville High School, to her community, and to our State, and wish her continued success on behalf of the students in the Palmetto State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and commend Hartsville High School Athletics Director Phyllis Carol Griggs for over thirty years of outstanding leadership to the athletics program at Hartsville High School and congratulate her upon being selected as Athletics Director of the Year by the South Carolina Athletic Administrators Association.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Athletics Director Phyllis Carol Griggs.
