715 Key Assignments & Compensation Summary

You have five key assignments for BUSMGMT 715 and two optional opportunities to take your learning and compensation even higher. You can earn up to $100K (in BUSMGMT 715 currency, of course,) in basic compensation for your six weeks of work this summer. If you take full advantage of the two optional bonus opportunities, you can push your pay to $124K.

  • Key Assignment #1: Three Case Memos

Our Case Studies and Articles are outlined on pages 4-8 of our syllabus. They are all available to you free of charge from our UWM Library. There is no text book required for the class.

Each of our four core weeks has a HarvardBusiness Review case study assigned for our topic of the week. Your task is to provide a thoughtful, practical, effective and well-written solution to the case. You'll be asked, given the information that you have, what does the main character in the case have to do at this point to demonstrate effective leadership, team-building and effective management? In your solution you’ll be required to draw on insights, concepts or tools from three of the four articles that you studied for that particular week. The minimum requirement is that you complete a Case Memo for three of our four core weeks.

Your Case Memo will take the form of a memo to your boss (me) of no more than three pages (double-spaced, no footnotes necessary). You’ll find the exact criteria I’m looking for on the Learning Materials page of our D2L Web site. See “How to Ace Your Case Memos and Personal Apps.”Electronically place your Case Memo in the appropriate file in the D2L Dropbox. Your Case Memo is due no later than 5:30 p.m. each Monday (because we’ll discuss our solutions that night). Each of your three written Case Memos carries a maximum payout of $8K ($24K total) toward your final compensation. You may select any three of the four core cases to work on. I will provide specific written feedback for you on each of your three Case Memos in the Dropbox file for that assignment.

  • Key Assignment #2: Three Personal Apps

Once you’ve read the assigned articles and applied their best insights in your Case Memo, your next task will be to transfer what you’ve learned to a professional or personal situation in which you need to demonstrate leadership, team building or effective management. You'll be asked to take one of our articles for the week, the one that was most meaningful for you, and apply its tools and concepts to a situation in your own work, academic or personal life.

Your Personal App is a written assignment, no more than two pages (double-spaced, no footnotes necessary) in length. Again, the criteria for you to follow to earn as much as you can on your Personal Apps are in “How to Ace You Case Memos and Learning Apps” on the Learning Materials page of our D2L site. Your Personal App is due in the appropriate file in the Dropbox by 5:30 p.m. each Wednesday (because we’ll be talking about them in class on that night).

You’re required to write one Personal App for three of our four core weeks. Each Personal App can earn you up to $8K ($24K total) compensation for your work in the class.

  • Key Assignment #3 - The 715 Mission Challenge – Part I: Team Result

Working together to successfully meet the 715 Mission Challenge is the practical test of your individual and collective leadership, team building and effective management knowledge and abilities. You’ll receive the Challenge on July 9. The 715 Mission Challenge counts for up to $32K toward your final pay for your work in the class – up to $16K from your team's result in the challenge itself and up to $16K from how well you contribute to the performance of your 715 Mission Challenge. Each of these two elements is outlined below.

Your individual pay for your work on your 715 Mission Challenge is based on your team’s performance in the competition. Individual rewards are based on how your team finishes in the competition:

  • First$16K per team member
  • Second$12K per team member
  • Third $8K per team member
  • Fourth $4K per team member

Your 715 Mission Challenge team will present your response on Monday, August 11. Your instructor and two guest judges will force-rank our four competing teams from first through fourth based on the content of their response to the Challenge itself (50%) and the effectiveness of their presentation for their solution to the Challenge (50%). The team winning the competition will also earn the coveted 715 Iron Team designation, with individual awards presented during the celebration on our final night together.

  • Key Assignment #3 - The 715 Mission Challenge – Part II: Your Individual Result

You can earn up to an additional $16K of compensation based on your contribution to the success of your team, as determined by your teammates. Each of your teammates will complete a brief 10-item assessment of your contribution to the team. In turn, you'll complete that same assessment for each of your team colleagues. You'll find the assessment on the Learning Materials page on our D2L site. For example, if your teammates rate you as having contributed 100% to the team, you'll receive the full $16K payment; if they judge that you contributed only at a 50% level, you'll receive $8K, and so on.

  • Key Assignment #4 – Written Feedback to Team Members

By 5:30 p.m. on our last night of class on Wednesday, August 13, you’ll upload one final file to the Dropbox. In that file you’ll provide two pieces of specific feedback to each of the people you worked with on your Mission Challenge team: one, a specific individual strength they brought to the team that made the team as effective as it was and, two, something specific they can consider doing in the future that would make your colleague even more effective in a team environment. I've given you a template on the Learning Materials page of our D2L site to use to guide and present your feedback and your 360 assessment of each of your teammates. I will combine the feedback from each of your teammates and provide it back to you with a confirmation of your final compensation and grade for your work in the class. The feedback you give and receive is anonymous and confidential. Take this assignment seriously; it’s a great opportunity for you and your colleagues to practice giving and receiving feedback – an essential skill for a leader, team builder and effective manager.
