Part 3: Coffey’s Hands

Ch. 1 silent: Paul is back to present tense at the nursing home. Elaine, his lady friend, gives him the advice to keep writing even though it is dredging up bad memories and ghosts.

Ch.2 : Reprise of Dean being choked by Wharton. Brutal hits Wharton and knocks him out while saving Dean’s life. Percy stands there dumbfounded.

Ch.3 all except last page: Paul’s UTI is worse so Coffey heals him (183). Delacroix called Coffey a “gris-gris” (hoodoo man). Paul believes Coffey to be a “conduit of God” and explains his healing as a miracle.

Ch. 4: Paul visits Hammersmith (the reporter for Coffey’s trial) whose son was disfigured by a dog. Paul compares Coffey to a dog- just bit once, but once was enough. Hammersmith and Paul reveal that Coffey was treated harshly (whipped).

Ch. 5 silent: Billy Wharton peed on Harry’s pants so the guards aimed a water hose at him and put him in a straight jacket. Billy spit his moon pie in Brutal’s face.

Ch. 6 silent: p. 220- Paul compares Melinda’s (Warden Moores’ wife) room to the Green Mile. Melinda has a brain tumor.

Ch. 7: Guards get Delacroix to have Mr. Jingles perform a show so that they can practice their execution of him

Ch. 8 Silent: p. 233- Quote from “The Jabberwocky.” Percy is attacked by Wharton, which causes him to pee his pants.

Ch. 9 silent: Foreshadowing the death of Mr. Jingles and bad weather is a bad sign for the future.

Ch. 10 silent: Paul and Brutal ease Delacroix’s anxiety about what will happen to Mr. Jingles when Delacroix dies by telling him about “Mouseville”- sort of like Disneyworld. Percy squashes Mr. Jingles.

Part 4: The Bad Death of Delacroix

Ch. 1 silent: Paul back in nursing home. Brad (who in Paul’s mind is just like Percy) squeezes his wrist and wants to know Paul’s secret. P. 251- washed-up quote. Georgia Pines (nursing home) also compares to The Green Mile in Paul’s mind.

Ch. 2: John brings mouse back to life.

Ch. 3: The guards tell Percy that the mouse is alive and made Percy promise to put in for a transfer after Delacroix’s execution and he agrees

Ch. 4: The Green Mile is compared to a circus. Percy doesn’t wet the sponge, and the execution goes very badly.

Ch. 5 silent: Curtis Anderson (substitute warden because warden is home with sick wife) questions what happens at the execution. There is some lightheartedness once again to cover for the pain. Brutal is quick to answer that they did their jobs.

Ch. 6: Wharton’s awful barbeque song shows how evil he is.

Ch. 7: Paul is emotionally upset and mentions atonement (trying to make up for the wrong that’s been done). He admits to understanding Coffey better.

Ch. 8 Silent: Paul is planning to help Melinda (again, atonement for allowing Percy to mess up Delacroix’s execution).

Ch. 9: Paul’s plan is introduced to the guards. He plans to help Melinda with John Coffey.
