Background Information: Esther Pearce was an elementary school teacher for decades in the White Salmon area. She received her college education in North Dakota, but decided to move west soon thereafter to begin her teaching career. Her first job was in Lyle, Washington. Following that, she accepted a position at the elementary school in White Salmon where she taught second & third grade for many years. Her love of teaching also inspired one of her three daughters and two of her grandchildren to pursue the same career.

Purpose: The purpose of this scholarship is to financially assist students graduating from Columbia High School who may otherwise not be able to pursue dreams of a college education.

Selection Criteria:

u  Graduating seniors who have been at Columbia High School at least two years.

u  Indication of financial need.

u  Preference will be given to students intending to major in education.

u  Students showing motivation and commitment to their academic future.

u  Demonstration of school and community service.

A committee comprised of various CHS staff and community members who have worked with seniors shall assist in choosing the recipient and an alternate. The Pearce family will make the final selection.

The completed application and essay must be returned to the

Columbia High School main office by May 1.
