Globalization Webquest SVHS US Hist

You are going on a webquest. This document is your map. If you can complete each task, you will earn a reward. This lesson surveys various maps, charts, graphs, videos, photos, and other primary source documents to assess the impact of globalization and current events on the U.S. and world economies. Remember you may pause videos or even play them back if needed.

You must submit your answers on paper to earn your prize (credit). You may type your answers, print it and turn in the printed document or you may hand write all the answers on lined paper. I am not worried about copying questions. Please label your answers by number. The letters help, but the numbers are most important.

1.  Estimate how closely the article resembles your life.

2.  Guess what year the article was written?

B) to load the video. When the gapminder page loads select high-resolution video. Select save and place it on the desktop or somewhere you will remember. Once it downloads, select open. Click the play button when it is loaded. You may need to complete this video at home or on your phone. Try to load the video at school, but if it doesn’t work, move on to step C.

3.  While the video loads, answer this “do you think the country you are from enjoys long life and wealth? Or are you from a country that suffers from illness and poverty?”

C) Follow this link, http://www.gapminder.org/ when the page loads, click on the image of the graph with all the bubbles. It should load (takes a bit) and be titled, “Wealth and health of nations”. Notice if you move your cursor over the biggest blue circle it is India and the life expectancy is 65 and the income per person is $3163.

7.  What are the life expectancy and the income per person for the USA?

Move your cursor over the income per person and change the axis to child mortality (0-5 year olds dying per 1,000). Change the other axis to Children per woman (total fertility).

8.  Which region has the greatest fertility and the greatest infant mortality?

9.  Why might this be so?

10.  Use the graph to figure out which country has the highest population, total and which country has the greatest life expectancy in years.

Press play, then scroll the mouse over a big circle to see which country it represents. Don’t forget you can replay or pause the animation.

F)  Watch the video at http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-22185262 it is filled with “hotspots” or boxes to click for more information during the video. Some of the questions are in the hotspots. The actual video is just over 3 minutes so you have time to visit the hotspots and learn what is going on. Answer the following questions.

18.  Watch for the oysters and click on the hot spot. What happened to the oyster population from the summer or 2009 to the summer of 2010?

He talks fast, uses academic language and is explaining high level economics. Load and watch the video on this link to answer the questions. You will need to locate the Crimean Peninsula on a map of the Ukraine without assistance so pay attention.
