BFF for Life?
Kayla Miline, a Maryland native, moved into the Waterton Subdivision the summer right before 8th grade. She lived in the house right behind mine just where the trees separated the dividing line between our two lands. In this house formerly lodged Mrs. Vanessa, Mr. Kenny and their four girls April, Lisa, Nigeria, and Reasha, who used to accompany me on my wild childish adventures. One day they moved away. As a twelve-year-old girl, I was crushed. I saw them from time to time, but it wasn’t the same. Surprisingly four years later, they moved back into their old house, but this time with a new step sister named Kayla and step mom named Mrs. Binky(I still have no idea why they call her “Binky” and I don’t know if I want to know).
My first encounter with the Miline women felt odd. Mr. Kenny and my dad had been friends for years. When the word came out that he was back on Grayson soil (Grayson is the town we lived in), my father was quick to invite him over for a drink to celebrate his new family. One night, around eight o’clock at night, the doorbell rang and the Miline family was standing on our front porch. My heart started to beat fast in anticipation to meet these new additions to the vicinity. I opened the door with surprising force, causing them to jump a little. Wide eyed from my overly excited welcome, there stood Mr. Kenny, Binky, and Kayla.
It was strange seeing Mr. Kenny in the presence of another woman besides Mrs. Vanessa, though she did slightly resemble her in a way. Just like Mrs. Vanessa, Mrs. Binky was a tall, fully busted woman with skin the color of maple syrup. She rocked the short hairstyle on top of her petite head, which did not match her rounded body structure. Kayla, on the other hand, did not inherit the “Amazon woman” physiqueof her mother. She was short, just barely tall enough to ride the children’s rides at an amusement park. This brown skin girl had short, black, straight hair. The texture of it seemed coarse so it was obviously natural. She was shaped like a Matryoshka, one of those Russian dolls that decrease in size. There was her head, thenthe first curve of the doll resembling her chest, and finally her bowlegs represented by the bottom half of the figure.I could tell she was shy. Once they entered our home, she did not really converse with us, which was understandable since we had never met before.
Later that first night, after we had all gotten to know each other a bit more, my mother suggestedthat this stranger and I have a sleepover. When she announced this idea, I thought she was crazy. I barely knew Kayla and my mother had the audacity to invite her to sleep in our home! This was an insane idea and was even more shocking when Kayla’s mother supported the idea. That night I slept on a blow up mattresswith a girl I had just met. As we began to talk, she began to open up. Quickly, we both realized we had a lot in common. The both of us loved soccer, the NFL football team the Washington Redskins, and importantly, it seemed as if we both had the same mindset when it came to achieving our goals in life. We talked as if we had known each other forever. We bonded and became instant best friends that night.
Ever since our arranged slumber party, Kayla and I were close. We were like ying and yang, Batman and Robin, peanut butter and jelly, and anything else that goes perfectly together. We went everywhere together and were inseparable. Most peopleassumed we were sisters on account of all the inside jokes we had.Even though we were not biological siblings, we acted and treated each other as such. Together we were family.
During our junior year of high school, two girls moved to town named Evonna and Ally. No, they were not related. It was just a coincidence that they moved at the same time, butwe all become best friends. Evonna was beautiful I will admit. She looked like a model some would say. She was very tall, about 5’11” I believe, and slender with the exception of her disproportional double D cup size. Ally, though, was different. She had a skin tone the color of mocha. Her hair extensions were ratted and obviously cheaply done. I could tell she tried to maintain it, though it was not working. Together we were untouchable (with the exception of Ally and Evonna, who later turn into promiscuous bitches, but that’s a different story for a different time). We all ran track (well Evonna tried) and hung out all the time. Everyone knew who we were. We were the clique. You could say we were like the “Queen B’s” from the chick flick Mean Girls, however unlike them, we were nice to people. But, all great things must come to an end at some point.
The summer before senior year I noticed something different about Kayla. Some would label her new personality as shady. I knew something was out of place, but I quickly brushed it away, which I know in hindsight was a mistake. That summer Kayla did something I would have never expected. She lost her virginity to our neighbor, Chris. In our society now, this does not seem like a shocker to most people. More teens are losing their innocence a lot younger with each generation. However, what made this so shocking was the fact that Chris was not a single man, and she knew that, which made the situation even worse. Chris was a player but also one of my closest friends. He moved to the neighborhood around the time Kayla did, and when they met it was love at first sight. They dated for a few months in the 9th grade but later separated after she was caught cheating on him with this adorable Hispanic boy. He eventually began to date another girlnamed Kala (pronounced the same as Kayla). Although, at the time, he was dating someone new, he still kept this flame going with my Kayla. He cheated on Kala with Kayla. This went on for over two years. I knew it was wrong, and I told her that, but she didn’t listen. Even though I knew all this was happening, I didn’t think she would take it this far. Chris and Kayla had sex. When she told me, I didn’t know who she was anymore. She became a mistress. This wasn’t the same girl who was my best friend. I kept her secret because I knew the consequences if it got out. Her secret was safe with me.
A few days before school started, I went to the mall with a few of my friends, including Chris and Cooper, Evonna’s twin brother. We were all laughing and having a good time until I got a phone call. It was from Evonna. I answered and all I heard was her high-pitched voice echoing in my eardrum. She was screaming nonsense at me about how I got Kayla in trouble. I had no idea what she was talking about. I was then quickly informed by Cooper that everyone knew about Kayla and Chris’s affair. When he spoke of this, both Chris and I choked on our French fries. How did this get out? As far as I knew, the only people who knew were me, Chris, and Kayla. I hadn’t told anyone, so how did others know?
That night, my phone was blowing up in text messages and phone calls from the clique and Kayla accusing me of telling her mom and of telling others. Why would I do that to my so called “BFF”? Best friends do not betray each other, and I told her that. She didn’t believe me. I told her the truth but she chose not to believe me. I felt there was nothing I could do.
When we got back to school, everyone was talking about it. Kayla hated me. Not only did she hate me, but so did my group. This confused me because this incident was between Kayla, Chris, and me;the other girls had nothing to do with it but still got in the middle of it. These girls felt as if they needed some type of justice to be satisfied, so they talked about me…brutally. Not just silly, run-of-the-mill high school rumors but intense lies about me, ranging from who I was, my family, and things that I’ve done. They even took it a step further and brought together a posse of five to seven girls and planned to jump me one day after school. I was scared. Terrified. I don’t fight. I didn’t know how to.
Once I heard this was happening, I told the school. I didn’t know what else to do. After the educational system got involved, the bitches simmered down. They still messed with me though. In order to stop this I had to find out the truth. I questioned everyone I knew in order to find out who had spread the news. After a few days of my investigation, all of the fingers pointed to one person: Kayla herself. She was the one who told Evonna and Ally, who could never keep a secret to save their lives, and she also told Brandon, a boy with whom Kayla and I have both had problems in the past and also could be characterized as an enemy to Chris. When I found out this, I had mixed emotions. On one hand I felt anger, but on the other hand I felt relieved that I knew the truth. She needed someone to blame, she needed a scapegoat, they all did so they wouldn’t look like the bad friend. I just so happened to be the lucky one to take all the blame.
It was hard to know the truthand still be accused. I cried and felt alone for months. My best friends had turned against me for something I didn’t do. I hated it but it made me a stronger person. If this event never would have happened, I would probably still be considered to have a pushover personality. People would still continue to take advantage of my meekness, but not anymore. This experience gave me a tougher skin and molded me into who I am today, which is a strong, independent woman who is not afraid of situations and who isn’t scared to stand up for herself and for others. I have become an individual who I am proud to be.
