Dear Sir / Madam
Re: Arriva Trains Wales Wheelchair Sports Spectacular – Health & Sport Partnership Workshops
Disability Sport Wales will for the 12th Year be holding the Arriva Trains Wales Wheelchair Sports Spectacular on the 11thand 12th September at the National Indoor Arena, Cyncoed Campus, Cardiff Met Uni, Cardiff. This event attracts over 500 disabled people to try over 20 sports with a range of adapted equipment on site.
We are looking to add value to this year’s Arriva Trains Wales Wheelchair Sports Spectacular by delivering a series of health and sport workshops that are purely designed for health professionals.
These sessions will be delivered by Catherine Chin, the Health Partnership Officer, for the Calls for Action Health Partnership programme with BCUHB which is seeking to strengthen partnership between Health and Sports Development specifically around disability and sport.
The workshops will follow a similar format to those delivered to BCUHB colleagues in North wales and give some reflections from learning to date.
The workshops are appropriate for any qualified health care professional although we will consider spaces for undergrad students where you have appropriate contacts.
The project in North wales initially focussed on physiotherapists Occupational Therapists, Postural Mobility Service and Paediatrics teams, but has also now extended training to Stroke Rehabilitation, MS support and GP’s. Training will be further extended to Ophthalmology, Audiologists and other clinical areas.
The workshop will be 1 hour in duration and will look to cover;
•Challenging thinking and perceptions around Disability Sport
•Understanding the benefits of physical activity & sport, reflecting on North Wales case studies
•How health professionals can work in partnership with Disability Sport Wales
•Understanding the role of Health Care professionals in promoting sport and physical activity to disabled people
•Introduction to the range of disability and inclusive sport opportunities
This will then be followed by an opportunity to observe activity delivered at the Arriva Trains Wales Wheelchair Sports Spectacular.
Finally for physiotherapists, OT’s and any others with a particular interest, there will be an informal up skilling session with Get Cycling ( where partners will be introduced to a range of adapted bikes, there appropriateness for specific impairments and exploration of individual adaptations that are possible. It is hoped that this will provide partners with confidence when discussing appropriate bikes with disabled people and parents.
There will be a series of 3 workshops with a maximum of 25 candidates per workshop.
On Friday there will be two Workshops:
