Stan King

The veteran my dad interviewed was Stan King. He enlisted in the navy and was an E-6 which is a Petty officer 1st class. His job was a EW1 which means he did Electronic Warfare. He was in the gulf war and when he went in he had no job but he did have a GED. The Gulf War was mainly about the conflict between Iraq and a coalition force of approximately 30 nations led by the United States and mandated by the United Nations in order to liberate Kuwait.

Stan enlisted in the navy because he wanted to do something with his life. Enlisted means that you volunteered and drafted means that they draw your name and you are now a part of the military. The war had 3 main phases: 1) Iraq's occupation of Kuwait, 2) The diplomatic game and sanctions against Iraq, 3) The allied war against Iraq.

When they returned the populations response was nothing. Stan’s military occupational specialty was Electronic Warfare. Electronic warfare is when you intercept radar and determine if it is a friend or foe. You can tell whether it is friend or foe by the signal that is sent out by the IFF system. This enables secondary radars to identify U.S. aircraft from enemy aircraft by assigning a unique identifier code to U.S. aircraft transponders. During the war Stan had received some theater ribbons. He also said that meeting his wife, visiting Kuwait and meeting some of the locals were some of his most memorable events.

A memorable person was Capt. Mcgrail. He was a fine leader, an excellent captain, and he always looked after his troops. We asked what was a positive experience for him. Stan said it gave nice pensions and experience. Pension is what you earn after you retire. We also asked Stan what his reaction to September 11th was. He said that he felt sorry for all those people who died.

This project was a really great idea. It helps to preserve veteran’s stories so that they aren’t forgotten. My experience with helping out was fun. The night before we got to put up tables and chairs along with the banners. I also like getting to go around and listening to a little bit of each veterans story. Each veteran has a little something to add to history and king high remembers that little bit.
